I'll chime in since I just finished ripping out an old shower stall & prepping to install new.
What Dub said is true ifn you're looking to hit a stud. Mebbe not ifn U R trying to avoid studs. What I found was that the wall that has the shower controls usually has extra studs to hold the plumbing fixtures. If the shower shares a common wall with another bathroom (commonly does) then there could be extra studs in that wall too that were added for installing medicine cabinets & such in the other bathroom.
For grab rails, I'd seriously consider revising your install plan & try to hit the studs with a different kind of fastener. That'll be the strongest way of mounting it. I've just seen too many get pulled off that way because people actually use them to pull on & rip them off the wall.
