EGR and PCV vs Oil Consumption

I have been reading upon the oil consumption issue and the recommendation to change the PCV and clean out the EGR. Could someone tell me how these two items can cause the engine to burn oil?

I didn't know either...and not sure I do now...but....I collected several of the threads discussing it and put them all in one place.

You've probably read all/most but here's the list anyway, all in one tidy place.

One thing I've learned (as I understand it) is that when the oil is lost through the PCV valve, it's not "burned" and not blowing smoke from the exhaust...it's getting sucked out in vapor form through the PCV.

Yet some owners have never changed their PCV after thousands and thousands of miles. My '01 with 77k doesn't consume a drop until I hit the highway for about 8 hrs straight. I change my PCV at every oil change, just because it's cheap and easy to do so.

That makes sense, but wouldn't those of us with high milage and high oil consumption be seeing white smoke or smell oil burning?

You are right. The oil is going out in the PCV system into the injection plenum and being burned off moderately.

I know this is an old thread, but this was a GREAT post to read and to follow the links! Although, it did make me MORE nervous about buying a VX. I am terrified of having to replace an engine so soon after purchase. I am good at checking oil constantly though ;-) Thanks for the great info!

By "moderately", do you mean it doesn't really generate any visible "smoke" from the engine compartment?

Does the PCV release any oil or oil mist into the engine bay...(I don't recall anybody saying they've had an oily engine bay) or is it completely "consumed" via combustion? :_thinking

Haven't seen any in my engine bay after long drives.

Where is PCV valve?

I have heard this more than a couple times (changing PCV valve with oil change). I'm less than mechanically inclined. Would someone briefly describe or provide a pic where the PCV valve is located. I'd like to start doing this replacement.

I have had my VX going on 13 years now and when i first got it i noticed it did use oil so the dealer ran an oil consumption test myVX used 1 qt. every 3000 miles. the dealer then contacted izusu america in California they said the motor was set up to use 1qt. every3 to4 thousand miles, none of the shop machanics could believe it, but for 13 years every 3 to4 thousand miles i either change the oil or add a qt. so i recomend just to deal with it. thats just the way the motor is set up.

It super easy, takes less than 5 mins, even I can do it! :slap:
It's under your plastic engine cover, front driver's side.

See that little square part of the cover sticking out about 1". It's pointing toward the driver's side. It's directly UNDER that.

HOW TO CHANGE PCV VALVE:
- Slowly lift up the plastic ENGINE COVER.
- It's held on by 4 rubber grommet things that fit on small metal poles on the engine.
  
  Often the rubber things will remain stuck on the metal pole, but just lift them off and reseat them back in the plastic cover.
- PCV is "L" shaped, one arm is attached to a black hose with a hose clip.
- Release the hose clip and wiggle hose OFF the PCV.
- Wiggle the other arm of the PCV upward from the engine. It can be very hard to get out, sometimes I use pliers.
  It's OK to destroy it with pliers but you won't be able to see if it rattles, And don't get any pieces in the open crankcase. Also, the black rubber grommet may stick to it.
- Can reuse the grommet if it's in good shape, if dried out - replace it.
- Shake the PCV to see if you hear any RATTLE...
  RATTLE = GOOD....No rattle= NOT GOOD.
- Regardless, replace it.
- I put a little engine oil on the plastic part that goes into the crankcase, makes it easier to seat it flush on the grommet.
- Reattach hose and hose clip to new PCV.
- That's IT ! :thumbup:

Many owners use the Purolator brand (Mfr #: PV1061)-
It used to be all black plastic with the sharp edges like pictured below, but 2 years ago they changed to the brown/blue model.

If your old PCV is that RUST BROWN COLOR, with black, (like in JAMAS' picture) it's an OEM (as best I can determine).

I bought a Fram PCV on ebay couple months ago. It was wicked cheap. $8 if I remember correctly. I'm gonna replace it for the first time next oil change.

@cris, I cannot believe that Isuzu would purposely make an engine that burns a specific amount of oil. If so, thats weird. LOL! Its more likely that they only told people this in order to save their butts from hefty warranty expenses.

Most Purolator are usually in the $3 - $5 range/ballpark.
One other brand I got from NAPA was $9, Checkers had one also in the $8-9 range.

It shows Isuzu quoted that 1qt PER 1,000 MILES WAS CONSIDERED WITHIN NORMAL.:freek:

On the way back from Moab I had one stop that yielded something like 370 miles from my last fill up and 1qt of oil . Usually between tanks if it shows oil burn it is like 1/8 to 1/4 of a quart . 1/2 quart between tanks is less common but does happen . And 370 miles out of a tank only happens out west. I normally get about 260 to 270 with 2or3 gallons left in the tank when I fill-up.
