Best stud finder for TILE??

Need to install grab bars on shower TILE....because somebody isn't that stable..... :goof:

Don't have a stud finder....looked on line, read up on features.
Need one that can definitely do TILE, and reliabilly.
Wouldn't mind having the other features too, hot wires, metal scan, AC tracing.



Looks like Zircon I500 (at $142 :freek:) is pretty good.....
Looked like a good idea to get one that has magnetic as well as electronic, so in case electronic doesnt find stud through tile, the magnetic will pick up the metal nails.

This Franklin ProSensor 710 also looked really good, great reviews on Amazon: $50.
But not sure yet if it can do TILE, or has the magnetic capability.

Got any cabinets on the same wall???

Iff'n it's a vanity, look up toward the top,(inside of the cabinet)sometimes behind the sink, sometimes behind a drawer, there SHOULD be screws into studs mounting any cabinet to a wall...& studs being 16" OC...well, I happen to know, you're a smart girl & can figger out tha rest...:smilewink

If there are NO cabinets on the same wall, use the "thump-thump-thump" method, with your finger,(this is assuming the tile doesn't go all the way to the ceiling) or a stud finder, THEN... w/ a hammer & a small nail, find the dead ctr of the stud, & level/measure down from there.

(god made spackling on the 8th day, to repaireth stud exploration...it's only reet rok, & your house is new enough where the leftover paint,,,that ain't dried up, should still match)

So saideth the dub unto the hammerites, & it was...so-so...:_confused

I'll chime in since I just finished ripping out an old shower stall & prepping to install new.

What Dub said is true ifn you're looking to hit a stud. Mebbe not ifn U R trying to avoid studs. What I found was that the wall that has the shower controls usually has extra studs to hold the plumbing fixtures. If the shower shares a common wall with another bathroom (commonly does) then there could be extra studs in that wall too that were added for installing medicine cabinets & such in the other bathroom.

For grab rails, I'd seriously consider revising your install plan & try to hit the studs with a different kind of fastener. That'll be the strongest way of mounting it. I've just seen too many get pulled off that way because people actually use them to pull on & rip them off the wall.

I mentioned the fastener that goes to the bars we selected in my first post, and it says to AVOID stud by 1.5". These things say:
"rated up to 800 pounds in Ceramic Wall Tile." Was the only one we found that seemed to be really good for tile.

We have the blue prints for our house....somewhere.....we're trying to find them to look at construction.

After looking over many stud finders, we decided to try the Franklin 710. It had 101 great reviews. We'll see I guess.
Also picked up a magnetic sensor as a double check backup.

Yah, I saw where you talked about avoiding the stud ... hence the warning that there may be studs in the bathroom where there shouldn't be any (based on 16" centering).

I'm not trying to scare you away from the fasteners that you chose but that 800 lb rating is for the fastener installed under ideal conditions. I'm sure that it's a great product but the Engi-Nerd in me forces me to exercise caution X4 since they will be used for mounting a safety device.

The 800 lb rating is for mounting it through tile that has been properly glued to the wall ... & the wall is greenboard or better ... & the wallboard was installed with screws rather than nails ....

If you trust the construction quality of your house then those fasteners should be fine. Both showers that I've worked on in my house had regular old sheet-rock behind the tile (fine for modular showers ... not so much for tile).

The blue prints for your house may not be much help. They are basically assembly instructions for the builder. How many times has hubby assembled something using the instructions & it came out ZAKLY right? Blue prints are a good thing but not for locating studs - they just don't have the resolution for that (prolly don't even show the extra studs I mentioned in my earlier post).

Individual studs are generally not shown on on individual house plans. They usually simply say '2x4 16" o. c.' YOu can often locate them with a stud finder and confirm the location from the other side of the wall.

I got me one of these. If there's a nail in the stud, it'll find it f'sho! Plus it's a lot of fun to play with.*

I use a powerful magnet. It works every time and they are fun to play with. Just don't put it anywhere near electronics.

oh my stud finder worked great, Dave and I are happily married! The second unit worked much better than the first, very strong magnet...:laugho:

So close ... & yet still an epic fail.

Everything got done except the glass enclosure for the shower. Had to wait for adhesive to cure before taking that step.

Oh well, my better half was still empressed enough with the progress that all is forgiven ... as long as I finish it this weekend.:)
