Actually gauging mods that = better mpg / hp

My 99 VX with 2" lift, 17x9 wheels (not real heavy at all)
and some 245-65-17 Michelins and Green cone filter intakes
been averaging 14 mpg actually driving in the city, avg temp
in tucson around 60-70 degrees, not driving hard at all.

Mod 2
Hi flow muffler. In this case I installed an 18" long Magnaflow
2.25" in and out.
Stock muffler weighed actual 39lbs.
New muffler weighed 15lbs.
More agressive sound, noticeable difference in performance.

link to be able to listen to it.
I like it so far, but it may be louder then I expected. If I can
handle it after a month or so, Im going to swap it out with a
hi flow turbo style muffler. They sound something between stock
and the Magnaflow. HP and mpg should be almost the same as the
Magnaflow just installed.

Mod 3 next will be installing some NGK Iridium Spark Plugs

my only mods that gave me both MPG and HP gains where an electric fan and hi flow exhaust. it had a cone K&N filter on it when i got it, switch back to the stock air box and picked up 2.5 MPG and felt no noticeable difference in power. your on the right track thou.

Nice work.......you know we have Denso Ir plugs right?

next mod then will be put a Green panel filter back in
with the stock box...and see what happens.

Who wants my stock muffler ????? its heavy, shipping
alone wont be cheap...

and, my plugs have about 30k on them, so Im going to
replace them with new Iridiums.

Next few mods will be Castrol Syntec oil, and new 02
sensors (which I know the results would vary from car
to car ) but it on my list of things to do.

I feel good about dropping off about 25lbs today (haha)

If you're really trying to change the MPG, wouldn't it be cheaper and less time consuming to go out and buy an Echo? Drive it one day of the week and it'll shave a ton of MPG off the VX, though indirectly.:rotate:;Dr;

you are missing the point, but thats okay :rolleyes:

unless your O2 sensors are known to be bad, new ones will do nothing to help. save that money for gas:bwgy:

partly true...
O2s wont always throw codes, unless very bad...
but if they are borderline, they can start effecting mileage
and show no code.
Generally we change them on our cars and customers cars every
85-100k. Mine look to be the oe units and have 105k on them.
I dont mind changing them in the near future, just to be on the
safe side.

Meanwhile, back on topic... I found that on the diesel a well maintained cone filter actually helped improve fuel consumption.

okay, so after about 2 weeks of the Magnflow
my mpg went up about 1mpg, worth every penny..
Sound level, thats another story. If I was in my 20s
I would of loved it. Outside the car, it actually wasnt too bad
but inside it under throttle it started to grate on me.
SO, today I had it replaced with a Dynomax super turbo.
Generally known to be a little more mild with same hp gains.
And well, I do like the sound level much better. Performance
feels the same to be honest too and I still shaved off about
30 lbs over stock.
The muffler avg cost about $80, a little less then the Magnaflow.
Granted the turbo muffler is glass packed, Ill probably end up
replacing it in 2-3 yrs. Not a big deal.
