All good, Devon called and said his computer was just crapping out, everything is good to go for may...
That is plain weird...apparently he is blaming the computer for telling him the place is going to be demoed? But now it's not saying that?
We better hope he has that thing backed up, because I'm getting the feeling that a computer "accident" of some kind is nigh unto inevitable between now and May...

Dang!! I just tried to book a room at the Stoop, and they want $100 or more depending on the room type per night. Gave me the "Event" B.S. even when I asked about the Isuzu group that has been staying there for the last SEVERAL years, told them we are the event. Looks like I'll be sleeping elsewhere and commuting to the stoop.

You might give her a name or two and the rates they were charged and then ask if the lodge intends to charge a higher rate when those folks arrive in town. Ought to be an interesting answer...

Just talked to Natasha ( I'm guessing the girl others spoke to) and explained the deal I helped negotiate as part of the promotion
I do for them in the Calendar etc...and the large size of our party!!
Apparently Jeremy Day, the manager has not informed her of the VX rates and discounts.
I explained it all to her, and she said she will honor the rates we had before.
So..this means
NO event upcharge on Fridays or Saturdays
Normal room prices right through your stay.
15% Discount at end of stay.

Room prices do vary according to style/location/and the number of beds.

The "event" fees were probably in place because of the Moab Relay. I hate when hotels raise their rates for any event. It's not like you are not already helping their economy as it is when you are in town. It's simple price gouging. They do that a lot at Ironman races...especially in smaller towns :(

I really want to go this year. As I mentioned in my "maybe" RSVP, my sister got me a gift certificate to rent a 4-wheeler (Razor thingy) out from Moab (she said it was all she could think of for the guy who has everything - I checked and am pretty sure some of my everything is missing! But it is a cool gift).
The problem is I am just starting back to work after more than a year off on awful medical leave, so I have zero vacation saved up (burned that before the medical leave kicked in) and am still only working half time. So I have to see how things go and measure the likelihood that my boss would approved the time off so soon after getting back. We are swamped at work, and they, in all modest, need me, since they hired a bunch of college grads that are willing but inexperienced mechanical engineers. I somehow became the wise old man of the engineering dept. Even my boss is two years younger and less experienced in oil and gas than I am. *sigh* (note: I am only 43)
What the situation with rooms? How many do you think are still available? Also, if I do go, my dad wants to come too. Which would at least be nice to have a second driver for the trip out and back.
Fingers crossed. I am just going to have to whip these green kids in to shape so they can do real work before May.

Call the motel, talk to Devon.
Thought a little graphic and pics would help the noobes get a feeling for the motel and "The Stoop".
The motel rooms are laid out as two separate rectangles, one story, and both sections face the parking lot in between the two.
Parking lot is only about 4-5 car lengths wide, so everything and everybody's rooms are really close by. There's parking spaces in front of each room.
The block of rooms with numbers 101 - 112 is the "older" motel, smaller rooms, very basic, lined up side by side by side, with a cement walkway /sidewalk along the front of the rooms.
The other block actually has two segments, #114 - 119, AND #120 - 125 one segment has 6 rooms then another straight segment has another 6 rooms, and an outdoor hot tub between them.
Each asterick is a room, the black parallel lines are the street along the front, and the red circle is the hot tub.
#112-------------------------------------#101
*********** ||
---------------------PARKING LOT-------------------------- ||
****** O ****** ||
#125-------------#120-------#110---------------#114 ||
There's a little grassy/dirt area next to the end room #112 (LDub's) as well as a little extra paved area in front of that room that has a picnic table. Dub sets up his Choco Monkee making factory on the picnic table, and we all bring lawn chairs and set up along the walkway and the parking lot toward the end of the building?.and it's magically transformed into what is affectionately known as "The Stoop"
Can see the "older" section of motel to left:

I remember being on the trails down in Moab back in the early 2000's in May and running across awesome Isuzu's all the time. Now that I'm the proud owner of a Trooper, I hunted around for this gathering and found it here.
I'm relatively new to Isuzu's, but not to Moab (been heading down there many times a year in Samurai's since 1993) and I'd love to tag along for this gathering if you'll allow another non-VX. :D
How is 'Zu Zoo structured? Do you guys have planned trails for each day or is it more of a wake up in the morning and figure out whats going on?

SRN, welcome to the forum.
ALL Isuzu's are welcome at Moab. The whole thing started off as an organized, official, event where you had to register and sign up for trails ahead of time. Over the years it got too complicated, and too expensive (insurance) so it sort of de-evolved into what it is now; a bunch of Isuzu nuts getting together to have a good time in the desert (or is that dessert?). It's, sort of, turned into a mostly VX thing, but a few other Isuzuers show up too. We have a few Troopers show up every year, and one or two Rodeo's.
As for trails, it's mostly a rag-tag, seat-of-the-pants, kind of thing. Everyone meets at "The Stoop" (the Red Rock Lodge) each evening for drinks and stories and trail teams will kind of naturally form from there, but some trails are decided on the morning of while everyone is sitting in line.
Come on out, it would be great to meet more Zuers.

Im starting to think the stoop goons have selective memorirs, they always manage to forget Jay and myself, showing up in anything but a Zu. ;)
Once a VXer, always a VXer.
Oh, and dessert is the yummy one mark, you always want more, so it has 2 s'es.

Yeah, we are joining Zeus as the red-headed step children that are "never spoken of publically".
Plus it doesn't help that most of us have more grey hair every year and do our best to kill as many brain cells as possible with alcohol each night on the stoop.

Sorry guys (Jack and Jay) didn't mean to exclude either of you. I just look forward to seeing everyone and I could care less what they drive. Like y'all said, I still think of you as Zu owners and keep forgetting that you own anything else.
So basically what we're saying is that everyone is welcome, but you have to play nice. :bwgy:

Ok, I am going. I don't care what work says about it. Or the fact that I owe an enormous amount of taxes this year.
So, I need to book somewhere to stay, and I wanted to ask the Denver peeps (such as VXorado and PBkid) when they are heading out and if they want to convoy out together (safety in numbers....for mechanical reasons...I am reminded of the burning Jeep we had for just the beginning of one of our trail rides we did).

Most of the fam stays at the Red Rock Lodge in downtown Moab: http://www.red-rocklodge.com/ This is the place that we have all be calling The Stoop. It's a, relatively, cheap place to stay and they tend to put up with our shinanagins. Most of the trail runs usually start from the parking lot of The Stoop too. It's kind of the center of our little Moab universe.
Others will camp at some of the various camp grounds around the Moab area, but I think most stay at The Portal ( http://www.portalrvresort.com/ ), but it sounds like some people are having/ have had issues with these guys. I think they have cabins you can rent too. Moab really isn't that big, so anywhere you stay you'll still be close to the action. There is another 1960ish motel called The Apache Motel ( http://www.apachemotelinmoab.com/ ) and it looks like it could be promising. There has been talk that if the Red Rocks Lodge ever closes down (they've been threatening) we'll just move the party to The Apache.
We have done a big Colorado Convoy before, but it seems to have broken down over the past few years with a few of us heading over at different times. I'm over in Carbondale and I'll be heading to Moab on Sunday afternoon/evening so if you want to head over then I can meet you in Glenwood Springs and we can convoy over from there.

You can really push your baby as hard as you want to in Moab. Everything from dirt roads to big gnarly ledges and rock gardens. My VX is my daily driver too and I am always VERY careful how I drive it out in Moab. I really don't want to ding or scratch it and, so far, I've done pretty good. It's amazing what a bone stock VX is capable of, and I know that my VX is capable of WAY more than I am. I just get nervous and don't really like getting all tippy.
We usually break up into a few groups when we go out on trails and you can always jump in with the group that suits your skill/comfort level. In the past we have done a VX only run where all of us go out together, and we usually pick a pretty gentle trail so that all of the new people can get their Moab feet under them. It was decided to NOT go on the VX only run any more because it usually ended up being a very long day, and some people got a little bored with some of the trails that we did. We did decide to do a newbie run on the first day of ZuZoo (usually that Tuesday) where a few of the "old guys" would volunteer to take the new people out on an easy trail so that they could get a better feel for what their VX is capable of.

I usually leave Aurora around 10-11am on saturday. Gives me a chance to sleep in a bit and still get there with time to set up camp and get some dinner. There is lots to do there from sight seeing on pavement all the way up to extreme stuff. Quite a few trails that are pretty easy and can be done with no problem in a stocker. I just spent a couple days there in my Volvo station wagon doing the touristy sight seeing stuff.

I have been trying to keep the Trooper running all winter even though I won't drive it in road salt, been doing good but I waited too long this time, just tried to start the Trooper and the battery is pretty much dead, so I brought it into the house (the battery, not the Trooper) to warm up and then give it a charge.

Hey guys, driving in from Louisiana (over 1300 miles), and had a tire question. Do I need anything special for Moab? Was thinking of getting some mudding AT tires but as there will be ALOT of road driving just to get there, I wasn't sure what the best options would be for me. Right now I've got the stock 18" Rims with 245/60/R18 on em. Would prefer not to replace the rims or spare if possible. Can I just use regular road tires or is there a nice hybrid AT available. Also, limited budget... can spend maybe $150 per tire.
thanks, Mike

Don't buy mudders for Moab. If you want to get them for LA mud, then fine, but in Moab you are driving on sandstone bedrock most of the time, or dry sand. ATs are better than MTs out there, and street tires work very well traction-wise (right, Jack?) although they don't have as much sidewall durability as I would prefer.

Many owners have done fine on street tires. No problem! I was on 255/50-18 street tires the first time. There's always a group that want to go on the easier trails that are doable by all. The harder trails (with names such as Steel Bender, Metal Masher..LOL :freek:) are usually only done by the gang that's lifted and has larger tires.
Some decent A/T hybrid kind of tires - Yokohoma Geolander AT/S, General Grabber AT2. And I'd even add the Nitto Terra Grappler as a great A/T yet great on road tire. I've had them for 10,000+ miles and they're very nice on road/highway. Most of these tires are near the $200/tire price.
I think you're price point may be a little hard to hit, but I'm sure others will chime in with some suggestions.

I switched from Pro Comp ATs to the cooler looking Xterrains, and the were GARBAGE in Moab. Bigger voids are good for mud, but you end up losing so much grip on any other surface that they are pointless. The stock all-season Duelers were better than the Xterrains! The looks do not balance the loss of performance, so I am back to ATs (this time BFGs).

The only time I did any offroading I was wearing Kumho Ecsta STX tires in a 265/60R18 size, and had no problems keeping up with the group. They're great on road, too; handling is super, and there is absolutely no fit problems with cladding. They are currently $149.00 at Tirerack (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+STX+KL12&partnum=66VR8ESTX&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes), so they also fit your budget.

X2...love BFG ATs
Hey guys, driving in from Louisiana (over 1300 miles), and had a tire question. Do I need anything special for Moab? Was thinking of getting some mudding AT tires but as there will be ALOT of road driving just to get there, I wasn't sure what the best options would be for me. Right now I've got the stock 18" Rims with 245/60/R18 on em. Would prefer not to replace the rims or spare if possible. Can I just use regular road tires or is there a nice hybrid AT available. Also, limited budget... can spend maybe $150 per tire.
thanks, Mike
I have cooper AT3's on mine. Ran Moab last year and those tires stuck like glue to the rocks. Hardly slipped at all for the whole trip. Mine were around $200 each but that's for a wider rim than stock.

I dont really agree regarding "Mud" tires being bad for Moab.
I have consistently run Nitto Mud Grapplers at Moab ...
....and also driven other VX's there, with other brands.
I swear by my Mud Grapplers.....and just purchased a new set.
(They last very well... 5 years , and are not super noisy on normal roads)
When aired down correctly ( one of my issues on Hells Gate!)...
...I have found them excellent.
And...the big bonus is a very meaty/chunky side wall that offers all
kinds of additional traction and side wall protection.
JMHO

Agreed, MT/Rs did great last year and so did the terra grapplers in my 2010 trip. I'm still happy I had the MT/Rs last year for Cliff Hanger because there was a lot of lose dirt... although a stock VX probably won't be running Cliff Hanger so it doesn't matter either way.

I love the looks of the Mud Grapplers (even more than the Xterrains)... very Fred Flinstone, and I did not mean to dis all MT tires. I stand by my review of the Xterrains though. Aired down to 15-20 PSI, they provided nowhere near the grip of the ATs. I think the tread pattern has a lot to do with it. The Nittos tread overlaps, and if you have a MT with the same basic pattern of an AT... you are not constantly on the void half of the tire rather than the rubber half.

Excellent Scott. Can't wait to meet you, but strange that we'll meet in Moab when we both live in the same state. I think that we're trying to get a little convoy heading over on the Sunday before Moab if you can/want to go.
I've brought my bike to Moab in the past, but usually end up not using it because I get so into wheeling trails and hanging out with the Zu folks. I think my girlfriend and I will be bringing our bikes this year but we haven't decided on road or mountain yet. I know, I know; Moab is the mountainbiking capital of the world, but the gf has just started to mountainbike and is not really comfortable on it yet. Still have some time to decide.

I really wanna get out there this year. I have the girlfriend convinced (she loved it when we drove through there in June) so it's just about work at this point. Do you guys know how much availability there is still at the Red Rock?
It will be nice to get out there for another Zu Zoo.... For those of you that don't know me I was heavily involved with the Zu Zoo that started back in 98... First 2 or 3 years were as they are now -- loosely organized, etc. Then the BLM got on our backs and made us incorporate and charge event fees for permitting, insurance, etc... We had to provide inspections at the event -- it went from fun to a whole bunch of work, so I'm glad to see it's back to fun. :-) Looking forward to meeting a bunch of you there.

Heh, yep that takes one weekend...cabin opening takes another...that leaves 3 weekends for wrenching for me. Some of the "optional" stuff might not get done...again.

I really don't like it when you guys narrow the time down to number of weekends left. I don't really have much to do to Vicki, but I still feel like there isn't enough time. On the other hand it means that Moab is that much closer.
I ended up extending my Moab stay by a day so I will be checking in a day earlier. Jo, Gill and Cece.....I'll see y'all on Saturday. WOOT!!

Spent all day under the VX yesterday and got a ton of stuff done, but found even more thats broken or worn out. Should have started getting it ready sooner, but I think everyone does that every year. :)

I think we can ditch "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance"...
..and substitute "Procrastination and the Art Of VX preparation"
At least this year I have the mechanicals done and tested ...
..its all insert paint/re-assembly and some mods to finish.

Pack creek campers...
don't know if you saw this on their website but if you pay with silver coins (ie all silver 50¢ or dollar coins) tent sites are only 50¢ a night and RV sites are a dollar a day...start saving those coins!
Also if you are active duty military you stay free...they just appreciate a unit patch!

Dont think I've seen any of those in about 30 years.
My to-do list is build a rear bumper and install Revo gears. Both of which I doubt I will get done.

yeah, we were supposed to get a foot plus and so far only about 2", cold and windy though. Must be nice having a job you can be right at only 30% of the time and still make great money. At least they look pretty on TV :_wtf:
Ordered some diff drop brackets and crossmember from Mr Darlington. Ive been trying to do as much work as i can so i can afford a lift before Moab.

Hahahaha no worries Sir Dub, if the brackets dont get here in time for me to install them before I head down then I wont be lifting this trip.

Well that scares me a little bit. Is it that hard?

It's not so much the difficulty as the fact that, from an engineering standpoint, dropping the front axle is way more of a PITA than it has to be...it just wasn't designed for frequent maintenance.
If you can convince/sucker a buddy to help you when it comes time to drop the brackets and center axle section, you'll find the project a lot easier. Plan for a full day, especially the first time.

For those going to Moab, I have a good set of oem front shocks, rear lower links (one slightly bent but easy to fix) and a new front cladding for sale that I could deliver. If interested throw me a pm.
