I planned 2 1/2 days of driving, kinda take it easy since she likes to drink her oil. I'm planning on a stop in butte Montana the first night then Salt Lake City and then it's just a short 4 hr trip from there to Moab.

If anyone is looking for a room mate in Moab to save some cash, I have a room at the Stoop with two queen beds and I will only be using one of them. Big thanks to Mark last year for making the same offer which made it possible for me to make it last minute. Figured I would repay the favor if it can help someone else make it.

Are there plans yet for a place and time to meet for the Denver/Front Range peeps going? Tomorrow I am going to put the new bushings in my sway bars (front and rear) with my friend's help, then we are going to get his 5th wheel trailer ready for the trip!

Finally some nice weather here after a dismal April!

We're leaving Sunday morning, May 12th...looking to meet up with the other Denver folks to head out together. Breakfast first maybe?

So this will be my home away from home while in Moab :)

Today was the first time I got to see it...it's pretty amazing. Room for 3 motorcycles in the "garage", which, when you take the motorcycles out then becomes a bedroom! Or the patio with couches! The center section on the far side slides out to make the kitchen/dining/living room (with TV/DVD/surround sound and satellite if we decide to take it). Never been in one before...it's a bit silly, but going to be so much fun! I love the checkered flag awning!

My VX won't quite fit in the garage though, so I still have to drive it out.

We got my VX's front and rear sway bar bushings changed today, and my clunking noise is gone! But now I have a rotational rubbing noise...I think in the one of the right side brakes. But I'm going to have an alignment done anyway this week sometime, so I will have them take a peek.

The Energy Suspension bushings were a breeze to install! It took longer to get the front skid plate off by far than to remove and install the bushings.

Looking forward to meeting/seeing everyone!

Joe's truck doesn't really seem to care whether it's pulling the 5th wheel or not...the torque in that thing is insane. All it does is lower the mpg from 20 to 11 (which is still pretty damn good considering my VX gets 14 pulling nothing but my butt).

We could meet at the I-70/Morrison exit like we did for the trail last year. But as you said, we can firm things up closer to the 12th, but yeah 9-10 am was what I was thinking.

Question to the gang: does anyone bring dogs with them? Have they in the past? I keep going back and forth on this with my awesome dog. He's 12, but still very lively and would love a Big Adventure. But I guess I am worried about shaking him up too much (are the trails we're going to do smooth but rugged/challenging, or all bumpy like here in the Colorado Rockies?), and of course about leaving him in the RV if I am out for a meal or something. He loves being in the truck, and although he'd be spoiled rotten at Chez Parent's, I want him with me :) Thoughts? Tips? Prior experience?

MSHardeman

I am in the same boat as you. Just picked up a new puppy this past Saturday morning, but I will probably leave him at a kennel here at home. Some of the trails we will be doing will be smooth, but most of them have some amount of jarring obstacles on them. There are a few obstacles on a few trails where anything that isn't nailed/strapped down in the truck will end up in the foot wells because you are headed straight down. I don't think it's fair to the dog (and I'm speaking about mine here) to throw him around in the truck all day. In the worst case he could get hurt from some of the violent shifting the truck will do. There is a nice kennel in town that some have used while out on the trails. They will have to chime in on that though.

The big thing is that some of the trails are on government land and no animals are allowed on them so you would HAVE to kennel your pup or leave him behind.

All in all, for me, it's just too much to bring the pup and all of his stuff, plus my stuff, plus the girlfriends stuff, plus the bikes, plus all of the tools for the VX, then find a place for the pup if I can't bring him on the trails or want to go mountain biking for a while.

Just my two cents.

OOh thanks for that feedback! No way I would take him on a long drive out to Moab only to have to stick him in a kennel (he's never been in one in his life! He'd freak out!).

As much as I would love for him to come, I think Hotel du Too Many Table Scraps with my parents is the safest route.

Thanks MS.

Biscuit has been with me the last three years. Loves it!
He stays in the motel some and at Moab Doggie Day Care (435-259-7922) Karen is the owner( a little quirky, but a good person)
Dogs are not allowed in the national parks.State parks? leash only I think?
If your going to have your dog in the truck...strap them down...depending on the trail...they will hit the roof and then hit the floor because they can't hold on! If you have your dog at the daycare reserve a night because you don't know when you will be back...breakdowns...ect...hope this helps

Awww come on Mark, don't discourage him. :) I brought Dakota with us last year and she did well out on the trail, even at 9 years old. BUT she loves riding in the vehicle and would be way more upset/nervous staying by herself in the hotel or at a kennel.

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/3300/DSCN0875_35.jpg

As for bringing all the stuff, well that's possible too, although I won't pretend that the accessories in this photo were cheap (except the watertight ammo cans, those things were like $8 on Amazon). We were able to bring our 3 year old, 9 month old, Dakota, and enough clothes and stuff for 3 weeks on the road.

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/3300/IMG_0577_1_.JPG

In all seriousness you should probably leave your dog at home if you have that option. I'm sure it was illegal for me to take her out of the car at lunchtime on the trail, but we were doing Moab back-to-back with our bi-annual trip to Wisconsin and I didn't want to leave her at a kennel for 3 weeks.

Well, room is a non-issue for me since we're bringing a 5th wheel RV with us. But as much as my dog loves riding in the truck, he can undo both harnesses I own (hidden thumbs I think!), and I wouldn't want to risk getting thrown out of a park or worse for having him with me.

It's only 5 days without him.... :(

The place Scott mentioned is good. I know "phines" kenneled his dog there a night or two a few years back.

Elephant Hill is on N.P., so that one is a no-no. "Zeus" got ticketed for having his dog on NP trail a few years ago.

Hubby is bringing two of our dogs on Wednesday, (yes Dub, "ghost eye" is coming to visit ya again!) - - - they love it and are used to flopping around a bit (on a big padded cushion) .

Sometimes there's somebody hanging out on the stoop for the day instead of running a trail, maybe they can watch the dog for a few hrs?

Kat you just need a cabana boy to fan you while you drive. YES PLEASE! (in your best Garth voice)

I gotta pray replacing the fan clutch WAS the fix for the overheating with the A/C on in super hot temps
Remember, I replaced it AFTER MOAB last year, where I learned the Ron Davis racing radiator alone, wasn't quite enough to handle A/C, 90+ temp, AND crawling pretty slowly - on TOTW trail.
Since install, I've only had one day over 100 down in Phoenix to "test" it.

Conspiracy sites claim a high probability of a Butters sighting Saturday night (5/11) at dinner. According to the Illuminati, the sighting hinges on if the convoy some call "ToCaliWeTravelAfterAStopInDenver" stays in touch that day. Or Ldub calls to keep me in the loop. Yeah, that'll work.

I'd already done the thermostat and that didn't change anything, and of course the increased capacity radiator.

So after reading about the many owners that had the fan clutch go bad all within about a year, I decided to go ahead and replace it, even though we weren't sure it was malfunctioning. Figured mine was 11 years old too, so maybe it was crapping out too.

So we'll see if I've achieved my crazy goal :goof: ----> A/C on full, air temp above 90+, and crawling/going fairly slow, or under load.

It's really hitting home now that some of you are already there or underway.
My to do list is getting shorter and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. I decided to go ahead and swap the newer radiator from the '86 into the '91 last night and it turned into something of a can-o-worms. If everthing goes well enough I should be locked 'n' loaded by this time tomorrow. I'm going to try to roll early on Monday to get up Soldier Summit before it gets too hot.

Speaking of hot........
You know we're all gonna fry this year, right?
Bring on the sunscreen.:yeso:
