I've never said it was certain to damage an engine and the fact you can get away with it has definitely led to it being perpetuated as a viable solution. But my point is the opportunity for damage is too great with modern engines and most especially for the mechanically inexperienced. You've done it with no problems and continue to do so, and that's fine.
