Reducing oil consumption

I've been fretting over this oil consumption issue. My VX just went over 60k and it was sucking about a quart every 1000 miles. I read the suggestions on this group and replaced my pcv valve for $11. Since then oil consumption is negligible. I don't know what a pcv valve does exactly, but I sure appreciate the suggestion and the apparant fix!

Thx for the solution, I wish Isuzu would be this creative and help solve their engine design problem by issuing recall or bulletin.

PCV stands for (positive crankcase ventilation). It's purpose is to scavenge combustion gases that passed by the piston rings into the crankcase and it reintroduces them into the intake manifold where they will be part of regular controlled combustion. It does it in proportionate fashion, when engine load is low, ring blow by is low and intake manifold vacuum is high, valve is partially closed. When engine load is high, ring blow by is high, intake manifold vacuum is low then PCV fully opens. If PCV fails opened it will reduce idle quality and on some engines oil will be sucked into the manifold. From other hand if PCV fails closed or gets blocked combustion gases will condensate within engine block and will degrade oil.
I would definitely check condition of plugs and check engine compression for high pressure caused by combustion chamber built up from oil that got siphoned through the engine and run cleaner through it.

Ok i have the same problem about 1 quart every 1000 miles so i guess i should replace my pvc. but does anyone know what it looks like and where it is located and if its hard to change?

VX922 - Thanks for the description of the pcv valve. I had the idea that it was something like that!

I'm not a mechanic, but in my opinion pcv valve replacement will probably only help in a few situations. Since it's such an inexpensive and easy to replace part, it just seems like a good thing to try.

Crankcase vac helps create ringseal. This is why some race engines will run vac pumps to pull high crank vac.

I've seen some of you run your valve cover to a breather. I wouldn't.
