As with everyone else who owns a VX, I became concerned about the excessive oil consumption issue that these motors were notorious for. After reading about Tom's catch can mod, I decided to give that a try. Here are some pics:
I purchased an oil catch can from ebay and installed it last weekend. Basically, modified the oem pcv valve to remove the internal spring valve and make it an open nozzle to have a better seal attachment to the cover and a clear passage to the can.
Had to make a custom metal bracket to attach the can to the brake fluid reservoir bracket since I no longer have the oem air filter box in place to attach to. As with Tom's can, this mod replaces the pcv valve itself too.
Drove the car like normal for a couple hundred miles (mostly freeway) during the week. Noticed that oil consumption had reduced quite a bit. I'll need to see how much over time. But you can see that a small puddle of oil rests at the bottom of the vial after a couple hundred miles.
Also noticed that the VX felt a little more peppier driving around. Not sure if it's a mental thing or whether the unrestricted passageway to the catch can made a difference for the pressure buildup in the valve covers or not. Either way, it's still too early to tell whether it made a difference or not. In the mean time, I'll be monitoring the oil consumption and see how it goes with this mod.
