    Thud/Bang after HARD braking

Every time, after I come to an abrupt stop, I experience a thud/bang when I start moving. It is like something gets "loaded up" during braking and then gets released when brakes are released.

Has anyone heard of this phenomenon on VX?

This has been reported several times, and usually was resolved by greasing the drive shaft. There are three zerk fittings, if I rememeber correctly. I had the same issue once, and grease fixed mine.

Seriously? I would have never thought of this solution!

Thanks for heads up, I will have to try this. Certainly easier than what I was thinking (worn bushings/motor mounts).

OK, I finally spent 30 minutes under my VX and I can't anything that can be greased... Does anyone have a better description of what needs to be lubricated?

There are three zerk fittings on the driveshaft...one on each of the U-joints and one on the slip joint of the shaft itself. If you don't see them you may need to move the VX so that the driveshaft rotates and brings them into view. The one on the driveshaft is closer to the front.

I found them, all three are "in-phase" and they were all pointing UP (making them impossible to see from the bottom ). I filled them full of grease, lets see if that helps the problem.

I was in a junkyard where someone was pulling a transmission out of a VX. the cross member (transmission rear support) was laying on the ground and was in perfect shape so I took it home with me. Mine was badly dented and when I pulled off mine and set them side by side mine was bowed up 2in in the middle where the transmission sits. I put on the undamaged cross member and that thud after braking then taking off was gone. Coincidence? Maybe. Can't explain why that helped, but now after 2+ years it hasn't done it since.

The VX is heavy for it's relative size as a 4x4 vehicle, so keeping the u-joints properly/regularly lubed is important.

Unless your motor or trans mounts are worn and the torque from the engine from a standing stop is allowing part of the powertrain to hit against the underside of the body somewhere, the u-joints and slip-joint would have been my guess too.

Easy enough to check and address anyway.

Sorry I missed this thread and did not see it until you figured it out I might have saved you some time and aggravation. I am glad you got it fixed.
I had the same problem and the transmission mount was the problem. I made a thread about it a while back so I added the link below in case anyone is interested in what I found too.

Also if anyone is interested Joe Darlington makes a poly transmission mount, we bought 2 of them and they are nice, PM him if you need or want one.

Did you get one from Joe? I picked up 2 and plan to install them before the moab trip.

Yes, Kevin and I bought 2 of them from Joe. One is installed in the Ironman, the Ebony has a new regular one so we have not installed Joe's in that one yet. I like them and think they are a good upgrade.

Go your PM but your box is full and won't let me send you anything. Here is the answer to your question...
