On the other hand they're just the right distance off the body to make a nice step down to keep your pant leg from getting dirty when you're getting out.

Not if you're a shorter legged person - Mav you're at least 6' tall with really long legs - - I'm 5'5" and I nail the back of my pants every single time I get out.
BUT they're fantastic and I wouldn't change a thing!
They're a life-saver for my VX!
