Finally had to add a bit of oil

Have checked the oil every other day until after I got back from the Florida meet. Had not used a drop, now I have put in a quart over the last few days. According to the oil change sticker I still have about 500 miles before the "recommended" change at 3000 miles. Think I am just going to go ahead and change. Looked at the Tiny Oil filter and am almost positive there will be a larger filter in either NAPA or Wix. Has anyone used a larger filter? Searched for Oil Filter but got a lot of info about oil and a little about filters but not specific Oil Filter information. I also found Shell Rotella for $12.99 a gallon at the local NAPA. I use that in my motorcycle and Big Truck. Bought a case and am heading back for three more later this afternoon. (Had the Goldwing on the first trip).

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Rod

Yes I remember a post and a picture of a larger oil filter with the same thread and width, sorry I don't remember the post or item number. I even try to compare and find it when I am at the store getting a new filter every few months but I have been striking out. Please share if you find it!

I've always used WIX...number 51334. Never looked into something bigger, just the recommended one.

Been using Mobile 1 for about 25K with limited oil use. Using the 5W-30 for high mileage motors.

Looks like he might have had to modify to fit? I am not sure, maybe you should try PMing or emailing him?

    Synthetic?

When my VX was at Richard Payne.. I was told he changed the Oil to Castrol Synthetic 5W-30...
It has been like that for 15K miles... [According to Ed G., the last owner before I got it]
I hear and read lots of Mobil 1 users within the forum.. is that better than Synthetic Oil? or is Also Synthetic?

As far as the filter.. I have the OEM I believe...

    Yes, it's synthetic...http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/.../Homepage.aspx

Even though my Amsoil has extended change intervals of 15k or 25k, I still get it changed every 3k - 5k miles. And change my PCV valve every other oil change.

It doesn't look like on the photo I saw, there was any mod. The filter base looks large enough and the harmonic balancer shouldn't be in the way.

Well, I run a Mobil One M1-105, which I BELIEVE is a bit bigger; been running that filter for so long that I don't remember what the "stock" filter looks like...

Start at post #18. In this thread Ganz, you mentioned you were using the longer 105 filter. Some discussion in that thread, but no real comments on whether it's good/better to use that longer filter.
Oh and you also mentioned the harmonic balancer, and the 105 still fits.

My service records show that I once used a Mobil-1 M-106 filter on my VX, which is larger than the M-104. But, I've been using the M-104 since it had 3000 miles on it, and never had any engine/oil issues, so I don't think I would gain any advantage from using a larger filter. If you race, go off-road a lot, or otherwise abuse your oil, it may help. As with most things, it's quality over quantity.

Well, when it comes to "filter area", there's just no substitute - bigger IS better, PERIOD! I for one have ALWAYS been of the opinion that if you can have extra filtering capacity for your motor oil with almost ZERO effort, then why WOULDN'T you? A quick check on Amazon shows ZERO $ difference between an M1-104 and an M1-105, and a whopping .97 "upcharge" for an M1-106 (which *I* did not/DO not know if that one will fit the VX). On every Chevrolet I've ever owned that ran a PF-25, I've upgraded to a PF-35 for the extra filtered area - talk about "cheap insurance"...
