I am loving this thread. I wish I could meet some of you! I think we would get along great.
This was always my answer to all the wannabe-outlaw Harley riders (the ones who'd clearly only bought the bike for the image) I use to encounter when out on my Ninja(s).
They'd clearly thought that by buying a Harley, everyone was then apparently supposed to consider them some sort of badass not to be f'd with by default.
Well I'm sorry, but you want respect as an American original, you display an attitude that deserves respect, you don't try to buy it.
Riding and wheeling first and foremost is about having a good time just like any other hobby, not about $#!++ing on others who don't buy the same hobby equipment as you.
Apparently, being a jack-a-lope faced piece of garbage is a jeep thing...
....you wouldn't understand.
Hows that saying go....."I've got your jeep thing. Now it hurts when I pee"
I've wheeled a VX
I've wheeled a Samurai
I've wheeled a full sized Dodge Pickup
I've never wheeled a Jeep ... but think it would be a blast to have an old CJ.
I don't think that you become AR when you buy a Jeep or that AR people feel constrained to buy a Jeep. It's just like any group of people, the more vocal/AR/cranial-deficient seem to rise to the most public view. It's human nature. I've known some really great Jeepers (all 3 of my brothers own or have owned Jeeps).
Unfortunately, the bottom line is that if you want to participate in a 4WD club in your area, you'll probably have to hang around and take the abuse of those few for a while until you find the 'click' that you want to hang with.
Think about it ... do you want to join to sit on the hood of your ride, drinking beer, and shouting insults to strangers ... or do you want to find those select few who like turning wrenches with friends (regarless of vehicle) and go play in the mud. Those two groups rarely have the same cast of characters.
My $0.02 ... & I want change!!!

Put a smiley after you say that Bub.
While I agree with that statement, I do know that stereotypes get created from several people having the same experience.
Like the Harley comments that were made earlier. The thing that people have seen over and over again is that Harley owners are mid life crisis men who have plenty of money and want to play tough. I have known plenty that are great guys and just like to ride for the sake of riding.
Same thing with Jeep drivers. They buy the jeep and the personality along with it. Again, I have known great and nice people that have owned or drive a jeep and are nothing like that stereotype. But when people live the mentality of "Its a jeep thing, you wouldn't understand." That's exclusion of everyone who didn't purchase a jeep.
I haven't had much experience with "jeeper creepers", but I have had experience with people being exclusionary because they purchased something that they perceived to be better than mine, making them better than me.
I think its that mentality, not the vehicle they drive that is the heart of the trouble that Marlin ran into.
---I will add that I have wanted a jeep ever since I was little and wanted to be just like MacGyver
I used to belong to the Minnesota Trailriders. It is not a "Jeep Club" per se (although 95+% of the 40 or so rigs were Jeeps) so they don't exclude non-Jeeps (in fact they do exclude fulls-size muddin' rigs). I got a few bemused reactions from some of the guys when I joined with my Trooper, but no negative comments really, just curiosity. And after I wheeled with them a few times, all was good...that's usually all it takes.
95 Trooper with a buncha stuff nobody here cares about...
"Same thing with Jeep drivers. They buy the jeep and the personality along with it."
ROFL
I think we're sayin the same thing (other than mebbe %'s). I think that maybe 10% of Jeepers are douches whilst you make it sound like it's over 50%.
That said ...
Protons rule & Eb's drool!!!!
Another way to view it is that stereotypes get created by the people who display the stereotypes.
It doesn't seem like anyone here is coming right out and making an all-encompassing generalization, only that in this day and age of the over-commercialization of...well, let's be honest here...EVERYTHING...there are simply more ego-based wannabes who have tried to buy their personalities than there are individuals who made their purchase just for the fun of it.
I'm only going to add here one thing, and I am sure it wasn't like this back in the day, but since I started riding (motorcycles) I am completely convinced that Harley riders are the two wheeled equivalents of Jeepers...
"Guy walks into a Harley (or Jeep) dealership. Sales guy walks up and asks, "hi there, are you a douchebag?". Guy answers, "why yes, I am a HUGE douchebag and I can't go a single day without trying to prove myself!" Sales guy says, "Great, let me show you our current inventory."

I know that most fellow VXers here are of the impression that I am not a complete a**, and I know that there are reasons for stereotypes. However... I ride (and love) my Harley, and I REALLY want a 2-door Wrangler. So, all I am going to say here is that there are good people in any group. Find the people that are not full of themselves (or their choice of vehicle), and have fun. Let the jerks hang out with each other.
Oh, and one last thing... VXers had (have) a bad rep with other Isuzu wheelers because of this same elitist attitude, so be careful about lumping all owners because of a bad experience with a select few.
Come on, Gil, you know you are a douchebag....lol, jk, and of COURSE there are exceptions to the stereotypes.![]()
