    INSTALL WIKI for installing a new steering wheel

    INSTALL WIKI FOR NEW STEERING WHEEL:

    DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL BEFORE STARTING ANY WORK!!!
    YOU SERIOUSLY DON'T WANT THAT AIRBAG GOING OFF


    1) REMOVE THE TWO 2 TORX (T30) SCREWS ON BACK OF STEERING WHEEL CENTER. THEY'RE ROUGHLY AT THE 10 AND 2 O'CLOCK POSITION WITH WHEEL STRAIGHT.
    I MOVED MY WHEEL 90 DEGREES, TO GET MORE ACCESS FOR THE SCREWDRIVER,
    ** BUT DON'T DO IT THAT WAY...MAKES IT HARDER TO GET NEW WHEEL ALIGNED**.





    2) GENTLY LIFT OFF THE AIRBAG ABOUT 2"-3" AND CONTINUE TO HOLD IT. IT'S ATTACHED TO TWO WIRES.




    3) GENTLY UNPLUG THE TWO CONNECTORS, THEN LAY THE AIRBAG SAFELY TO THE SIDE.


    UNPLUG WHITE CONNECTOR



    UNPLUG YELLOW CONNECTOR





    4) LOOSEN THE BIG GOLD NUT IN CENTER (19MM SOCKET). MINE HAD RED LOC-TITE ON IT, HAD TO USE A LONGER ROD FOR LEVERAGE TO LOOSEN. (DISREGARD THE DIRECTION I'M PULLING BAR AND IT'S THE NEW WHEEL IN PLACE....I DIDN'T TAKE PICS DURING REMOVAL PROCESS, BUT DID WHEN INSTALLING NEW)

    USE AN EXTENSION ON THE SOCKET SO IT CLEARS THE WHEEL WHEN TURNING.




    REMOVE GOLD NUT





    5) NEED A STEERING WHEEL PULLER. I LOANED ONE FROM AUTOZONE, $20 DEPOSIT, GET IT BACK UPON RETURN.




    6) THE 6 DIFFERENT BOLTS THAT CAME WITH MY KIT WERE NOT METRIC, AND NONE FIT THE SIDE HOLES. SO WE JUST ROUNDED UP EXTRA BOLTS WE HAD AROUND AND FOUND 2 THAT FIT, HEAD WAS 14MM.

    SIDE BOLTS ON EITHER SIDE OF CENTER LARGER BOLT DON'T HAVE TO BE SCREWED DOWN ALL THE WAY, JUST TIGHT.







    7) VERY CAREFULLY NOTE THE EXACT ALIGNMENT OF THE WHEEL ON THE VERY SMALL SPLINES.
    THERE'S ALIGNMENT MARKS AT THE 6 O'CLOCK POSITION ON THE PRINTED WHEEL.
    .





    8) USE A RATCHET TO START TIGHTENING THE CENTER BOLT (16MM), WHICH PUSHES DOWN TO RELEASE THE STEERING WHEEL.
    TIGHTEN UNTIL WHEEL "POPS" AND IS RELEASED






    9) ONCE WHEEL HAS POPPED, MAKE SURE BOTH WIRES ARE CAREFULLY FED THRU OPENING AS YOU LIFT OFF THE OLD WHEEL.




    10) PLACE NEW WHEEL ON CENTER POST, MATCHING THE ALIGNMENT OF THE OLD WHEEL EXACTLY ON THE SPLINES.

    AGAIN, CAREFULLY FEED 2 WIRES THRU CORRECT OPENING.



    11) REPLACE LARGE GOLD NUT TIGHTLY. ISUZU says Torque: 34 N?m (25 lb ft)




    12) RECONNECT BOTH WIRES TO THE AIRBAG UNIT.

    SNAP YELLOW UNIT INTO HOLDER:








    13) CAREFULLY POSITION THE AIRBAG ONTO THE WHEEL, BEING CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH ANY WIRES.



    14) TIGHTEN THE TWO TORX NUTS THAT HOLD THE AIRBAG.


    15) PRESTO!! GORGEOUS NEW STEERING WHEEL!



    SIZE COMPARISON:
    WHEELS APPEAR TO BE SAME SIZE, BUT NEW SEEMS TO BE A BIT THICKER, BUT MAYBE THAT'S BECAUSE THE OLD LEATHER HAS DRIED AND SHRUNK A BIT....DON'T KNOW.

    Nice sue! Good work!

    1 suggestion, please, please, please start your thread with 'disconnect negative battery terminal before starting any work'. I really would hate to see someone get injured or worse if they were not familiar with cars. Airbags are seriously dangerous.

    Additionally, the airbag module is classified as a pyrotechnic device. When you "lay the airbag safely to the side"; that should mean that you place it where it won't be dropped or damaged by falling items.

    I've never had the 'pleasure' of experiencing an airbag deployment but Murphy is a permanent resident in my work area.

    I treated the airbag like it was nitroglycerin!
    I wasn't sure if it could deploy/blow once the connectors were detached.
    Plus I wasn't sure if it could blow up from the back side as well as the front side, so I was uber careful to keep my headoff to the side and away from it when I was removing/reinstalling it. (I'm assuming maybe only one of the two wires was for the airbag, the other for the horn maybe?)

    When secured to the steering wheel, all the force goes outward. When being held in your hand, basically 1/2 of the force will come back towards you!!!

    (I'm assuming maybe only one of the two wires was for the airbag, the other for the horn maybe?)
