Didn't realize entry angle was a key element, but obviously that makes sense - the cladding (when uncut) comes really low on the front. And yes the mock-up uses Patrick's VX as a start. LiquidVX created the mock-up in anticipation of producing this winch bumper perhaps sometime this year.
Personally I think the bumpers above (and more so the second than the first) look like they belong on a Toyota, Jeep, or similarly bland vehicle (sorry Jack!) not on what is essentially a Japanese prototype/production 4WD sports car. IMHO a bumper that completely replaces the front cladding and generally follows it's shape (without coming as low of course) would be best. Marlin wasn't Joe D looking at that kind of design? Obviously curved steel would be out of the question, but at least angling the plates to the general shape of the front would be better.
