Dakar was just the begining.
I have wanted a Mercedes G Wagon for a long time. It's one of a very small number of vehicles I'd consider trading the VX for.
I almost bought a H2 SUT last year for a second vehicle. I think they are such cool vehicles...but they're also stupid for a million reasons (size, gas mileage, public image). I don't think I would have liked the $100 fill ups along with constant worry that someone would be keying my H2 or putting sand in the fuel tank.
I would consider a H3T Alpha since its actually a functional V8 truck.
After working on and driving (and getting stuck) an H1 wagon, I wouldn't even consider it. I hated that truck. The H3 Alpha is nice, but if I were to buy a brand new 4x4, it'd probably be a 4dr Rubicon. Now if I could find a sweet deal on a Unimog, that would be awesomeBUT I think in reality I would really like to get my VX back or build another one like it, do an engine/trans swap and my other mods and call it a day.
1999 Isuzu Vehicross-#1209- lots of mods - gone
1995 Honda Passport: Lifted, Locked, 34x10.50's, just a few things..-Click for build thread
For sure, don't buy an H1 unless you plan on spending thousands on upkeep. I've been out with Jeeps and H1's on trails and the H1's never get stuck in mud. The only issue is the wheelbase sometimes gets you centered on a large rock if you're crawling. Most of that is driver error related though.
My boss got this Wagon stuck in mud, but it was on Nitto Grapplers and KMC Rockstars, plus the southern slop down here isn't very friendly to such a heavy vehicle. I had to pull the motor, rebuild it, do alot of performance crap to it and some other stuff and man what a pain and the truck is still a dog, they should have never put a 6.2/6.5 in them. Now the Duramax versions, those are sweet but still, I don't think I would own one.
Here's said Hummer:

There are a lot of 4x4s I like. If Isuzus were out of the question, I would probably go with an old Toyota LC-70 (if I could find one). Or an old Bronco or Suzuki Sammy.
If I had the money, a Defender 110 or 90 would certainly be up there in options.
Now, if you are talking new school, it would probably just been a new 4Runner.

Jeep came out with the Lower forty concept. Wasn't there a kit that allowed you to build a jeep just like it, or was that from another concept jeep?
I agree, don't like the wheels at all on that truck, and he needs some meatier tires. I like the Rockstars on other rigs, just looks dumb on an H1.
The guy doesn't really wheel it, he's more of a "city" guy. He was originally thinking about having us do a Cummins conversion on it before he decided to have us rebuild the 6.5, he spent almost as much on the rebuild as he would have on a conversion....
