I just got done re-painting and re-installing my gas cap and ran into the same problem you are having.... What I ended up doing was Super Gluing the nut onto the latch mechanism. Tighten from there.....

I had the same problem. It was a little tricky, but I got it with some patience and trial and error.

As I recall, the problem is the inner ring is threaded and then you have to deal with the nut also that holds on the closure piece. Drill out the threads of the ring with a bit just larger than the bolt. Then you have a clear shot all the way thru to the nut, which will hold everything tight. The threads are not needed in just that one spot 'cuz the nut is all that's needed.

Yep, it's a case of patience and trial and error. I have done it a handful of times and it has gotten easier since I know what to expect. Glad you brought this up cause I was considering pulling it apart sometime and brushed aluminum polishing it. +1 for the reminder.

I think it is a bit easier if that is the first screw you put in, and yes small hands and tons of patience help.

For future reference it may help to put all the pieces into place then get them lined up and held in place with something like small drillbits or metal punches in a few of the holes. If all the pieces are at least closely lined up to begin with, getting the first few bolts threaded may prove easier.
