My '82 Mustang is a California car, so it came with special emissions equipment. When I replaced the engine about 10 years ago, I installed all new intake/carb and a complete cat-free dual exhaust, BUT I kept all of the original intake/exhaust pieces. If this car ever goes back to California (which is what the original owner has been promising for...oh...six years), he will need to re-install all that crap to get it even near passing inspection. The original air pump and vacuum lines are still installed and are a nightmare to work around. That emissions check is what has him too scared to return it to Californication.
But I would pull all that junk off. It costs power and as you said gets in the way. Easier to sell and buy another 82 in Ca. It's not like the 82 was a special model.
