    Question Jack Stand Preference?

    Hello everyone,
    While I am waiting for my newly purchased VX to arrive, I am getting all of my parts / pieces in-order to start restoring her. I've got quite a bit of work to do, so I'm thinking about placing her on jack stands while performing all of the work needed. Anyone have any input on what Jack Stands are the best to use with the VX?

    There are MANY variables to consider when choosing.

    1. What surface will it be sitting on? I have the old steel quad pod version but had to also get a set with a flat plate base since my driveway is asphalt. The legs of the quad pod will sink into the asphalt if you leave weight on it for long periods.

    2. What lift points will you be using? If you're lifting from the frame, you'll need taller jack stands. If you are lifting from axles or suspension arms, you'll need shorter ones.

    3. Get them plenty strong. As you are jacking the vehicle up, the majority of the vehicle weight can shift to a single jackstand. Once in place, the weight should distribute evenly though.

    4. A wide base is better for stability but makes the jack stands more difficult to store when not in use.

    LOL MileHigh..... Probably a little overkill for what I am planning.. Here's a list of what I have on the "To-Do" list so far:

    1. Remove front cladding to:
    Replace Headlight Gaskets
    Paint Front Bumper
    2. Replace Upper & Lower Ball Joints
    3. Re-pack Bearings
    4. Paint Calipers
    5. Replace Radiator Hoses
    6. Replace PCV Valve

    This is what I have so far, probably more to add to the list as I read up on the forum.

    For that work, I would actually lift on the rear axle instead of the frame, it will make things easier so you arent dealing with the rear suspension flex, and will allow you to use shorter jack stands

    So, I understand that I can put jack stands under the rear axle. What do I do with the front? I'm assuming I don't want any load on the suspension when doing any work to ball joints, etc... So, do I just put the front stands on the frame, or is there another way?

    yes, in the front go ahead and use the frame just behind the front wheels. The rear is a pain to support from the frame because the frame curves up over the rear axle so theres not much room to place a jack stand. just take care to not touch the brake lines/sensor wires that run along the axle. the tops of my jack stands are U shaped and makes this easier.



    these will tear up your floor if you arent careful. on ashpalt i usually put down a sheet of plywood under them to prevent them from digging in

    I measured 17" to the frame on the front of mine (lowest point just behind front wheels). I have a 3" lift and 33x12.50's though.

    If you are lifted I suggest 6-ton jack stands, they are a lot taller generally than the cheap 3-ton ones...on my Trooper the 3-ton ones are only good for under the axles, they won't reach the frame.
    95 Trooper with a buncha stuff nobody here cares about...
