    I understand the gears moving together, but it looks like it's welded to the housing... must be my eyes not really knowing what's going on in the pics!

    It is welded to the housing. Here is a pic of a welded diff installed, maybe it'll help:



    See the housing itself could just be a solid block, it's gonna spin with the ring/pinion.
