Mystery black goop.. what is it and where to get some?

I'm sure you've all seen it before. Its a tar-like black adhesive that stays flexible but supplies a firm bond between most materials. Its not permanent, but very firm.

I need some to install semi-permanent items. Its not black rtv silicone. Its very malleable, easily rolls into a ball even after years of aging. Very sticky stuff.

Any names for this product and sources?

Hrrm... butyl rubber eh? Just doesn't seem to have the same properties.

I first encountered the stuff as an adhesive for aluminum speaker grills on Radio Shack Minumus 7 speakers. I know ppl in this forum MUST know what I'm talking about. Ldub... I think he ran Minumus 7's for a bit.

Ah... I think I know exactly what you're talking about. My dad had a roll of it stashed in the garage, both now long gone. It had a paper liner that you peeled away. Unfortunately, there were no other markings on it.

In other words, glad to be totally useless to you.

paper release...thats the stuff, there's no stick-um on the back , its just to prevent it from touching itself....usually the thickness of an 'abba-zabba"...it can be stretched, paper thin, but smoosh it to itself and it aint commin apart...we usually use it in construction, but ive seen it used everywhere

Go to the plumbing department at Lowes or Home Depot. They still carry it but I can't remember what it's called either. I picked up a roll a few months ago.

I know exactly what you're talking about, & I'm still using the gutted min 7 enclosures as my rear speakers.
I remember Chopper referencing it in a post in the long ago, but can't remember if it was beautiful rubber that he was talking about. Seems it's commonly used in body shops...maybe shoot him a pm.

Yah, it's used for sealing drain pipes (really you can use it for anything you can get a full wrap on & isn't under pressure). It sticks to itself REEEEEL good but not much else.

It's by 3M and it's called Windo-Weld Ribbon Sealer. You can use it for window glass sealing, attaching the plastic dust cover between the door and the interior door panel, attaching emblems, etc. Usually available at auto parts stores that sell auto paint and auto body repair supplies.

That is NOT the stuff I was thinking of. What I was talking about is a small roll of tape but may be made of the same material. If it touches itself, you'll never get it apart.
