I've read that front-facing is great for ramming air into the engine bay, problem is you really can't control everything else that gets in - leaves, bugs, dirt, etc.  Rear-facing you don't necessarily have that issue, although I've heard that water can be a problem if your hood is tapered forward (like ours). Not much worry about this in a forward facing for several reasons. 
1 There is more garbage on the road coming up than would be above the hood.
2 Filter can be put in place to filter out bigger pieces
3 The top can hang out urther to keep stuff from dropping in (rain, acorns etc)
