Because you mentioned the "Hello World" thread, I just searched for it and opened it for the first time. I originally knew what the topic was about because I previewed the first post so therefore had no interest in opening it. There in itself is the issue with an individial not searching for topics that have been covered countless times - there is an inherent stance to 'help those who help themselves'... or simply pay no attention... or the urge to tell them to help themselves. However, I was kind of surprised to see the turn that thread took and now understand why you mention it here. Had Sue not covered it so handily new guy may not have had his questions answered and could have turned against the site...? Kudos to her for taking the time to better the experience of new users and the efficiency of this site. Awesome!

I, however, also have to point out the grabbing of the bull by the horns method of gaining open knowledge versus the grabbing of the bull by the horns method of supplying it. I would say the complaint of an individual not using the search function does not simply apply to 'newbs' of this forum but instead is a hint at an internet etiquette faux pas on a large scale. I think as a whole we (humans) are at the end of the early stages of forum-use evolution and expressing "come on, get with the program" is perfectly legit. In the future, this stance will have hopefully conditioned newbies to search from the outset which will effectively improve our search engines' ability to supply info for all and invoke exponential growth in the clarity of our knowledge base. This should give more strength to 'searching naturally' versus 'asking naturally'... Then again, I have been drinking!

    From which viewpoint?

Sure, maybe the people that are already here have seen the topics countless times, so the specific ways the topics can be described are by now "old hat" to us...but so what? That has nothing to do with someone new to the VX world.

It's the same on any website specific to a niche item such as the VX. It will have it's own slang terms, and to expect someone to walk in off the street already knowing the slang is simply an unreasonable expectation.

We've heard examples in the two threads being discussed where people have used the search function, and it simply hasn't delivered. Can we not take that as proof that the search function isn't the end-all-be-all answer that will end all veteran member frustration?

It's been tried, "countless times", it didn't work. Chalk it up to another failed experiment and move on.

HAHAHA! By slang terms, I guess you mean "fuzzy hole", "fangs", "horns", "diff drop"... any other examples? Say, something that may actually hinder one's ability to type in the search field: "common VX issues"? Speaking of experiments, maybe you could create a VX glossary for new-comers, for simply complaining about "childish over-simplifications" and not supplying something to resolve the issue at hand implies you have no good ideas; only good observations... and as a veteran of VX.info 'shouldn't you hold yourself to a bit higher standard'?

The problem isn't that you own a Jeep. Its that you no longer own a VX and still own a Jeep.

    Right.

And besides, it wasn't me complaining about childish over-simplifications anyway, so your challenge shouldn't have been directed at me in the first place.

Look, 'gentlemen', this really has nothing to do with new VXers specifically - maybe you two are focusing on the potential new VXers because that is where your empathy lies. Good for you! Kudos and crackers all around! My remarks are aimed at the lack of effort on a large scale... I scaled it down ONCE to address you individually. So let me reiterate once more for you on a large scale... (3rd time may be the charm)...

Perhaps forum search engines do not work so well because lazy, unmotivated, no-help-for-themselves forum users the world over have flooded them with basic and simple questions that have become asinine and redundant and they have since become a bear to sift through. Consider it a failed experiment and grow from it! (I hear clapping out there.) Time to evolve. We know the info is there, come on, so do they. Search terms? Please. Unfamiliar forum? Please. Small or not, VX.info deals with the same demographic as the rest of the internet, like it or not. What the rest of us are saying is that informing people it is time to get accustomed to searching IS our way of helping out new VXers, as well as regular folk, and our childrens' children.

Here is an example for you: I was installing a Sierra DBW accelerator pedal into my Blazer Sunday... BTW, I learned ON MY OWN that DBW stands for 'Drive By Wire' - kind of like slang terms, acronyms. And I didn't have to ask one single person what DBW stood for... YAY ME! Must be from my previous conditioning of figuring things out, 'cause as you know, I am just as stupid as everyone else. Anyway, the pedal does not fit since it came from a full size truck... what to do? To the internet! What does one do on the internet when in need of information - SEARCH!

Oh sure, I could have just gone to LS1tech.com and asked some guru to do the legwork for me and then gone to bed on time, but ya know, I hold myself to a higher standard. Besides, who would I have asked, "Which website should I go to for info?", and which website would I search for to ask that question?

I figured I would either have to order an H3 or Trailblazer pedal assembly to fit in my ride. Well in my search, I discovered I could use a '97-04 Corvette pedal since it has a 24x reluctor and 1x cam sensor motor just like my Sierra stuff. I could perhaps use an SSR, CTS-V, Camaro, Express, and more! There are also 4 PCM types to watch out for! Some pedals sweep fom high voltage to low voltage while others sweep the other direction causing max throttle at start up yet floor it and you idle.

See, I don't like the look of the Vette pedal and the plug does not match my harness either so I naturally went to eBay to search for an H3 pedal anyway... Wow, it seems to have the same potentiometer housing thing as my pedal!!! So I may be able to swap my potentiometer housing onto the pedal assembly of the H3... since I have found no info on this idea, should I ask someone if I can do it? Maybe. Or maybe it is my idea to test out and pass on to someone with enough gumption to search for it or comment on it...? It may even work for a certain VX receiving a 6.0 LS motor...

I was able to find all this info in one location (minus the H3 part) because the OP (original poster) took the time to help himself beforehand and had lots of info to describe his circumstances, problem, and attempts at success - people loaded with info were willing to help him out instead of just saying "SEARCH", ie evolve.

OK, reply if you must but I have explained my stance more than I even cared to and there is nothing more to say so this thread is closed as far as I am concerned; you may rejoice. Good luck in your efforts of enablement. Peace!

Are you freakin' kidding? How about you look.

The threads we've been discussing (this one and the other that was referenced) ARE about new VX'ers specifically. If you want to get on the soapbox about internet search engines and their usage in general, start another thread and explain your stance to your hearts' content.

Regarding THIS thread though, no one has said what you're proposing wouldn't be the ideal, but we aren't living in a perfect world (no, not even here on VX.info), and probably never will. So while some of you continue to rail against that idea by beating your own dead horses, maybe you could consider taking a few minutes to stop patting yourself on the back regarding how much better than others you think you are at using the search function, and help do whatever you can to ensure that VX.info has at least a fair shot at that higher standard.

And I realize I've ruffled a few feathers in the past around here, but I hope all these pot shots that are being taken are based only on the opinions being expressed about the topic of this thread and not on our past differences, because in my opinion, the creation of a welcoming atmosphere for potential new members should be a bigger concern than ALL our differences of opinion put together.

    Reply if you must indeed.

Let's just agree to disagree and move on. I seriously doubt we're going to change each others' minds.
