High humidity, falling temperatures and calm winds have allowed the hoarfrost to accumulate to unusual levels. Hoarfrost gets the first part of its name from hoar, a gray-white color often associated with things that age.

If you are not old enough to be aware of the term, then you have a long way to go to get the "hoar-ish" look.

I have heard the terminology, but never actually seen one on the ground.

I've seen it on rare occasions. If the ground gets saturated like it often does in VA because of the clay, then the air temp drops suddenly (& drastically), the moisture in the ground hits the cold air & makes real purdy ice crystals all over the grass. Kinda makes the top layer of soil look like a frozen tar pit as well.

BTW - NOT the best conditions for 4wheeling. That's how you end up frame deep in muck (voice of experience).

That looks a lot like the stuff they called "snog" in Spokane (Fairchild Airforce Base). It would make little spikes, perpindicular to everything. I was told it was caused by them seeding the clouds with something to disipate the fog, so their jets could fly. I remember my car all white and fuzzy, but the best part was my antenna would be about 1" diameter with little ice spikes.

I just remembered I took some photos of hoarfrost earlier this month when it was really cold. We get hoarfrost on the mountain tops when it's real cold like that. Gorgeous stuff! It coats every surface.
