Road War (PBkid, ignore this thread)

So, last week the wife and I went down to Johnson Valley for the first "Road War Weekend Event". This was a 3 day event of Mad Max fandom. All in all, I had a decent time, but the turnout was a lot less than what I expected. I would have been happy just going for the main day, Saturday.

However, regardless of all that, the entire event was made worth while as I got a ride in Paul Miller's complete Mad Max 1 Pursuit Special. To see his car was good enough for me, but to take it out on the playa and feel her open up was amazing. My rust heap of a Falcon is only a shadow of this right now, but believe me, the thought that one day it will be this cool gets me all pumped up.

    A few pics.

    The car.

    Me riding shotgun.

They look SOOOO nice together, don't they?

Aside from the Falcon, this guys lifted "HellCamino" was my favorite vehicle there.

I can't wait to get my car going.

    Thumbs up

That must have been a thrill. I bet it gave you hope for the future. Well, the future of your Falcon project at least.

You have no idea how crazy it made me seeing Paul's completed car. Talk about envious. Just phenomenal.

Naaa, you can't. The Hellcamino is TOTALLY redneck. However, it was done up pretty wastelandish so I liked it.

Holy carp! That video is insane! Thanks, Billy. Unfortunately, I am not really familiar with So Cal. This was my first trip down there.

You were in the dry lake bed, the Hammers trails were in the hills right there. That video is from a race they have there every year (2010 will be #4) called King of the Hammers. It combines rock crawling (the Hammers Trails) and desert racing (on the lake bed and surroundings) in one race. It is growing fast and now has qualifier races (going to the one in Tucson in 2 weeks). A ton of fun to watch...I hope to make it out there for the race sometime.
I have the King of the Hammers videos (The first and second crusades) on my Christmas wish list (view the teaser here)

PB...your just to young to remember zoomie exhaust. They were pretty popular back in the day!

THIS looks like the most fun $5000 can buy...until you crash:
    Fixed it for you

Yeah, pretty insane watching them bash into each other and push each other around. Some of those guys helping to push the trucks back over are NUTS. One of the dudes looks like he escaped getting crushed buy inches...

How do those rigs control the rear end steering? Do they have like a stick or something or a second wheel???

Watching is kind of like watching Ralley racing in Europe...no fences, just stay out of the way. When I go to the qualifier I am volunteering, so will be right on the courses either as a judge or to help with recovery

Rear steer is usually set up with a joystick, it usually has a return to center, and uses a hydrolic ram to steer the axle.

You're right, and so is PB. That encampment belonged to the owners of the Hellcamino, and you know Rednecks can't spell! There are no English classes in the wasteland either.
