Maybe this'll clear things up a bit...

To me, it represents the ever present spectre of death, always lurking just behind the gossamer fabric that we perceive as reality.
I'd love to see it with little cartoon baloons over the heads of the three people...the middle dude would be like: "OH CRAP!, not THIS again."
The dude on the right would be saying: "Dammit Beavis, get your foot off my sword before I kick your arse."
The one on the left?..."Hey look...I'm side scrolling!"
