To set up camp first, I would first have to drive 3 hours from Tucson to the camp site, set up camp them drive the 3 hours back to Tucson so that I could drive the hour and a half the other direction to get to where the trail starts...not so practical!

hmm... good point. either wisdom or stupidity for not picking a trail that ends near where it starts so you can set up camp early 
(i guess thats the eagle scout in me, set up camp before the fun starts)
