How do you do it without breaking them?

VERY CAREFULLY! I use a flathead screwdriver and gently pry the tabs away from the rail.

From the side facing outward, or inward?

There are tabs on both sides, but I think it's easier to start on the inside.

The way I do it is to stand on each side, slip my fingernails carefully under the inboard edges, and carefully "lift" it up and out...

Yeah, they are TIGHT. I snapped one tab on one of mine when removing. Just go real slow and be careful.

I have the rail covers off of mine and can snap a picture of them so you can see where the tabs are if you would like.

JAMAS, here are a few pictures for you.

This one is tough to see, but it's the outside of the roof rail. Notice the notches at the front and back, that's where the tabs on the rail covers snap in.

This is the back side of the roof rail. Again, notice the slots for the cover tabs.

Back side of all four rail covers. All of the tabs are perpendicular to the surface of the covers.

    Cover Close-up.

I think, like others suggested, you have to wedge a screwdriver, or your fingers, under the bottom outside edge of the rail cover and gently pull away from the rail so that the tabs on the covers clear the slots in the rail. Then you can rotate the cover up until it comes off.

    Hope this helps.

Just removed some last week....the easiest way is to flat head from the outside and twist the screw driver very little and they pop off. From the back and the angle creates pressure on the front and the tabs are more prone to break.
