bunch of idiots in congress. This is supposed to keep high polluters off the road and they give them an incentive to get a new car. But it takes resources and ENERGY which burns GAS and OIL in order to recycle metals and plastics. EMMISSIONS are given off when they do this. Then because there are not enough parts at the junk yards/recycling centers, they will have to RE-manfacture NEW parts which ALSO require ENERGY and EMMISSIONS to make. They drain all the traded cars for clunkers of the oil, fill it with sand/salt/water and cease an engine that could be perfectly good! WHAT A WASTE! And WHY is my VX a clunker? I get 18 mpg on it. My wife's car gets 22 but is breaking down and it's NOT qualified? Stupid.
Call me a geek, or maybe even nerd, but face the facts, we da ones be rulin' this world!

Actually....scrap/salvage yards are buying these "clunkers" and parting them out.

At least that is what a salvage yard guy told me.

He said they have bought a TON of cars. Each time I talk to him, its another 60, etc.

They are supposed to be crushed.

I guess dismantled works just as good though ... look how well that worked out for the Army when they wanted to take the old flat fender jeeps off the road.

You know I saw an interesting report on the news last week that questioned the wisdom of launching this program in the midst of the restructuring of GM and Chrysler. Basically the point was that because thousands of American dealerships have no cars to sell, this environmental program is undermining the automotive market recovery by driving buyers towards Japanese and European manufacturers with tons of cars available for sale. The guy being interviewed stated that had we waited until GM and Chrysler were back up to complete production capacity BEFORE launching the program, the American auto industry would be getting a huge influx of capital as a "side effect" of this new environment policy.

    no cars to sell

Not sure where they were but dealers in most of the USA were stuck with months worth of inventory on the lot with no one buying. If they had no cars to sell the program would not have been needed to kick start the auto sale market. Also I have seen news programs showing tons of cars in storage lots with no where to go.

I guess it depends on the location. I know I pass several dealerships on my way home every day that are down to fewer than 10-15 cars on their lot whereas they used to have a 100 or more. But maybe all those are being closed? I dunno...

    Question

    More clunker tid-bits for ya...
    Our Government at work:
    Subject: Clunker math...

I guess I must be on the wrong page on this "clunker" stuff...

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil…
5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption. And 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75 per bbl.

So, we all just spent $3 billion...to save $350 million.

Hmmmmmmmmm. How good a deal was that?
But, I'm thinking that they’ll probably do a great job with health care, though!

and if GM had to file bankruptcy , where did they get the money to expand their manufacturing plant in China ???

A moment of silence for the lost vx's................................

And maybe a moment for the other sweet cars like the GNX and Aston martin and the vette's and 300zx's and etc.....

What the hell were people thinking?! They could've gotten alot more for these vehicles on trade in or selling private party. Lets hope those vx's at least get completely parted out instead of just scrapped. And lets hope, for their sake, we never run into the owner's who cashed them in!
