There is no way that should be a total loss. Most of the front end damage is cosmetic. I had no problems when I rear ended a guy a few years back ($5000 in damage to my VX...he ran). The front end parts are still available out there (mine needed radiator, fan, front skid plate, cladding, bumper bar, various supports and some random straightening of a few things). I am sure you had some damage underneath also. Do you know what all was/appeared to be damaged? Most of the parts under there are probably shared by the Trooper. Try to get a list of damages from the shop.
Most insurance companies will try to cut there losses and total it since most people will just say okay and move on. If you put up a little fight they may change their way...remember, VX's are a limited production vehicle and are becoming even more limited! Keep on fighting!
This thread actually led me to contact my insurance company, usaa, to find the value of my vehicle. They quoted it out with accessories at 9500. Works for me. If I wrecked it, I would strip every accessory I could off of it.
