As a 1st timer that just came back from Moab in a stock VX, I can give some impressions.
Oh, my tires were 255/55-18.
1) Many stayed at a certain motel there in town, (Red Rock Lodge)where we had some social get togethers in the parking lot
2) Several camped at different campgrounds either in tent or RV. Mostly Portal RV park. We also had one evening get-together-BBQ at the Portal RV park pavillion.
3) Moab has several different difficulty level trails, to say the least. Todd Adams , our trail leader, took us on Fins&Things on Monday as kind of an into but also because it's short, took maybe 90 mins or so. It's listed as a "D" in the trail books, but I managed everything on it OK.
4) I didn't make the Tuesday "VX only run" as I was too pooped, but from the pictures, it had several parts that were more difficult than I would have been able to handle (stock and not lifted). It was about 9+ hrs long.
5) By Wednesday, the group kind of splinted into 3 groups, some of us went with Todd again, the other two groups selected their own trails, which were much more difficult. Todd took us on Hell's Revenge (again listed as "D") and I handled it too, but did incur lots of undercarriage scrapping, but no problem because Ldub had installed a transfer case skid plate for me that am and it was MOST used on this trail. Must have one of them. Again, because I'm not lifted (and won't be in the future either), and the skid plate hangs down about 1", I scrapped the skid plate quite a bit.
6) The remaining couple of days some groups formed and went on different trails, most went on more challenging trails because they were equipped and experienced.
Since most there were lifted (to various degrees), most would not have incurred the stuff I scraped up. I don't mind since it's all on the bottom, not easily visible.
~I had a front bull bar, which is highly a stupid idea for Moab I've decided, as it did get scraped up and lower tubes got kind of flattened a bit. Nothing visible, all on the bottom.
~My rear LOWER most part of cladding near the exhaust pipe got some scrapes.
~My tail pipe got slightly reshaped (from one scrape)
~The OEM plate that covers gas tank at rear got some scrapes.
~Most of this all was from the Hell's Revenge really rocky part of the trail.
~On Monday's short run I took a 1" chunk out of the lip of a front rim...don't even know how. So you should do want several did and buy trail rims & tires, don't use the OEM chrome ones like I did.
Not a scratch on my paint or anything and it was a total blast, great great fun!
You must give it a try!! It's that much fun!
Hope this gives you some overview!
