Allow me to be the first to swim against the current and be unpopular opinion (as usual)...

    *facepalm*

First off, too big. Looks like an eyesore to me and I am a Subaru guy.

I saw the other thread (and that is the scoop I voted LEAST likely), and I am still REALLY completely unsure of what purpose a ram air of any sort will do for you from there at all. You will REALLY need to be ramming some heavy air and going pretty fast to force air through all that plumbing to do anything at all for your engine bay (which will still really do nothing, so too many of us have found out, heh).

The work involved will seriously hamper any chances you have in resale.

Sorry dude, gotta say it.... rice. Just my opinion of course, but when you are embedded in the Subaru show/autoX community as much as I am, you see some absurd stuff (that even makes your project look golden).

Don't mean to pi55 on your picnic, but sometime ssome wisdom can be found in various opinions, heh.

That's exactly what i meant; If he is so focus on being rally oriented then spend those $$$$ on the engine, trans & drivetrain.
Costie also mentioned flooding & by experience, because i'm. also from a tropical country i can assure you once you get into a flooding there's no snorkel that works, only a winch, however Mrharris told him to do whatever costie is happy with which i'll agree with, but since he consulted us about this proyect many of us provide him some insight.
    Dakar was just the begining.

The air recived from this will be comparable to the air a snorkel recieves on a jeep.

Well like i said before, i like it, some like it and like the rest of the people that have seen our VX's not so many like it, so by just owning a Vx, you are swimming against the current anyways. Its cool that you feel that way, it's what you think and i respect that. But i didn't post pictures of it to have people judge it, just look at it. and like i was brought up, if you don't got something nice to say, don't say it at all, it won't get you anywhere but just put rinkles on peoples forheads. and i was not asking for an openion on this thread, just keeping the people interested involved thats it. I'm not upset, but ricer, i think thats a little to far. Its a functional scoop. Rally vehicals have them, eather for fresh air inside for the drivers or for ram air on very modified Rally vehicals. This scoop is for a snorkle reason mainly like i said before, if nothing else works, at least the snorkle will work for the true intension of this project. Also just cuz rally vehicals have not done a scoop for just a snorkle don't mean i can't. Hay maybe i'm the first to start something new . Well anyways a snorkle does work Gussie, thats why they are made. I understand your from Columbia and you know about vehicals back at ur home counrty have snorkles for flooding reasons, but they do make them for the reason your vehical won't hydro-lock. it's not like i'm going scooba diving or anything, just for emergancy perpose and fun offroading.

With the exception of old muscle car shaker hoods, most hood intakes are used to provide air to intercoolers. When you look at stock or semi stock, if there's an intake it's on top of a supercharger or velocity stack, normally tall enough to take advantage of some of the additional cool air. I think the placement in this application would provide some cooler air, my only concern is what shape it'll be in when it gets down to the engine compartment.

You do get the added benefit of the snorkling effect, provided the path is well sealed all the way to the intake - however the biggest problem most people drivng thorugh water in the VX has experienced is a failed alternator. Something about the water getting inside the wiring components - read some of the threads of the Ocala off-road meets. You may want to do something to shore up and waterproof the other electrical elements under the hood if there's deep water in your future.

Kudos on trying something different - whether it works the way you thought or not, at least you're doing something about it instead of talking. Tone may not have approved of what you're doing, but I'm sure he'd be on board with the attitude behind it.

Costie,I don't know how much rallying knowlegde you may have, however when your compare an jeep with a VX you are making a mistake, the problem with the VX is that the designers didn't had on mind a snorkel to it,plus there's no accesories avalaible to do a professional snorkel system for it,many fellow VX'ers here told you go ahead & do what makes you happy, however if you ask them if they'll follow you on this i bid none wouldn't.

The VX is one of a kind SUV,so special that few regular mods on other vehicules just don't fit for the VX. And the fact that the VX is a SUV that not many people wouldn't consider as a vehicule because is like swimming agains the stream shall make think about it.

By the way,i'm from venezuela, not colombia.I belongs to the venezuelan national 4x4 isuzu club & also had a nice toyota named "MACHO" which looks very alike the tropper 2 doors, just with a V6 engine & i can also tell you i had a snorkel system designed by toyota.

Rally for years on differents locations across the country in very tough terrains & got vertical lock even with my well designed snorkel,so don't take this snorkel stuff as a "life saver" to get you outter all stucky situation.

You must also do few mods related to electrical exposed at the engine, such as alternator & the starter & wiring.

I saw few months ago a VX in england thru youtube with a snorkel, very rookie looking, the guy made a hole on the driver front fender & runned a flex plastic pipe all the way up to the door pillar.

However costie no hard feelings, what can i say ?

Just go for it & keep us posted on the progress

Man, your Vx looks sweet, but I too am not sure how much good a roof mounted snorkel will do. I Wish my Vx looked half as cool as yours...

I like it. I was actually considering a small scoop backwards in the rear of the roof as a vent to pull air through the cab better with the windows down.

    Coastie,

Although I thought you were a little outta control at first, your VX is absolutely unique and it shows off your love and creativity. Props there. And that's all that should matter--how much YOU like it.

I also completely agree with Wormgod in technical terms.
If it will somehow help performance, she's YOUR ride, MOD away!
However, it seems like a lot of work for an experimental mod. And although it would be 'silly' to just stick the scoop on the roof for looks only...you might get the same results out of just that.

I am impressed with your ambition though, don't get me wrong.

what is it with subaru people and thinking everything else on the road is rice??

newsflash- subarus come with a huge hood scoop and a SQUARE wing, doesnt get any more ricer than that...

sorry wormgod, its nothing personal, i just read the subaru forums because im considering a subaru as my next vehicle and all of them have their heads so far up their own arses that they are gonna need windows put into their stomachs so they can see where they are walking...

I think what Wormgod meant by "rice' was in regards to people going overboard with useless mods on vehicles in the sense that it's SUPPOSED to create this (rally) image rather than function. It drives true autoX/rallyists up the wall, as well as the everyday person, because people that don't understand what true performance enhancing mods are can't understand or respect the difference. To many, they are nothing more than ridiculous eyesores.
There are some Subaru jackasses out there as well, ricing out their wrx's instead of autoXing it or just being happy to have one of the best all around street cars that come stock.
Hood scoops and spoilers that come on Subarus are performance inspired, beneficial additions. Although they might not be totally necessary to most of the everyday owners, neither are a lot of the features that come in a lot of vehicles.
However, it does get way, WAY more ricer than that.

so, changing a vehicle because you like the way it looks is ricer now?? because im pretty sure most VX owners bought it because of the way it looked

oh, im very aware of the purpose of the spoiler and the hood scoop on the subaru, im very very interested by the subaru, i love them and think they are great vehicles. i just dont understand why the owners seem to think they are above everyone else...
