If you grabb attention on the way the VX's in those pics looks you can figured out that "ANY" one really got any "RICER" mods, all of those VX's are mostly modified inside then outside, suspension & engines are improved for true rally, yes still you don't see any one with "SCOOPS" "AIR DAMS" o big holes on them.

I can bid you 100's of dollars that those mod VX's will dust your windshield without scoops just because they all focus on endurance & dependability.
    Dakar was just the begining.

bro you focus and focus and focus on 1 thing and 1 thing only, the "scoop", if you read the whole thing throughly, you will read that i said i don't have the cash to throw away in 1 big mondo size project, yes i know those would smoke me, and thats awsome, i give them props, but like i said before, i started with the outside first, then i'm working on the inside and then go deeper to the mechanical side. my pocket only goes so deep ya know, plus like i said the scoop is not for performance to the engine, you understand that right? sorry i didn't put a long black pvc pipe on my side of the fender and up to the side, i just don't like that way it looks on the VX, personally. Again, the engine, are not that many mods you can do other then a s/c that those vx dont have anyways, and tranny, diffrent gears and so on will come later. if you read the thread about the yellow/green rally VX, it didn't really have that much done to it, just really diffrent shocks and extra gas tank. if you look at my gallery and see the process, you will see that i have gone a long way, just money is an issue here, but with due time it will come all together. so whats your openion, now that i truely ask. Do you think my VX is "RICER"? Cuz i don't think it is in my own eyes and what i think a real "RICER" is.

P.S. Sorry about the Columbia comment, i always get the Columbian flag mixed with yours, my bad.

I know this is old, but any updates?

I think it looks great, much better than what I would have thought it would look like. With the rack cargo basket, it's less noticeable. Without the rack basket, I don't know if I would care for it as much.

Now I assume most everyone knows what these are for on rally cars, but in case anyone was wondering... Rally's frequently take place in the deserts. You would never want to waste hp by turning on the A/C in a race, and you wouldn't want all the extra weight of the A/C unit anyway. So they often have pop-up scoops, not to be used as a snorkel, but to cool the driver and navigators. You pull a lot of air through one of those things.

I don't know how far you are planning on modding it, but the A/C delete would be a cheap one to do. You just would have to buy a smaller belt. Then just create a hole in the headliner, and have a window that drops down kind of like a pop-up sunroof, but installed upside down. I would think that you would only want to do this if you're extremely serious about starting to rally, and you were not using the VX for much else, or you live where it doesn't get too hot.

As far as subarus, it was the first year sti that everyone remembers as a ricer. They totally miscalculated their target market. The 2004 came with gold rims, and a ridiculous spoiler that was as high as the roof on the sedan. It did not come with a radio, and maybe not even AC? The huge air scoop fed the intercooler, so I don't have a problem with that, but overall, the thing was hideous. They are much more mainstream and without badging, it's hard to tell the sti's from the WRX's.

pbkid, if you are still looking for a subie, the best looking car they ever made, they made for Saab in both '05 & '06, but it was much more than badge engineering a WRX. The 9-2x looks more like a Saab than a Subaru. The Linear is the N/A model, and the Aero is the turbo. Plus you get some sti and saab goodies thrown in. It has the tight steering ratio of the sti, along with the 3 spoke sti steering wheel, plus a tighter tuned suspension. Being a saab, they upgraded the seats, head unit, headlights, foglights, climate control, active headrests and improved side airbags. Usually, you can find them cheaper than a WRX. It's a no-brainer. I like the '05 better as it has the 2.0 turbo, the same one that is in the current sti in Japan, and the motor they use for rallying. Americans didn't want to pay extra for a smaller turbo (N/A 2.5, for several thousand more you get an Aero with the 2.0 turbo) motor, so in '06 both the N/A and turbo motors were the 2.5. People tend to want the '06's more, but the '05 is the better way to go and they made a lot more of them. The motor spools up faster and is a better more reliable motor than the 2.5. You can drive it in boost all the time, so turbo lag is an issue you can avoid. It's cool to have such a rare vehicle, but on the other hand, have more aftermarket potential than probably any other car as all but body panels are interchangeable with the WRX. You can often find great deals on used upgrades, as people trade out and mod the WRX's so often. Police are aware of the WRX's, yet the 9-2x flies under the radar. Plus the people on saab92x.com are cool. Not as cool as this site, as people tend not to mod as much as on this site. Good people, just mostly not as active and addicted like this site.

I don't know why so many members here get so upset with so many mods. It's your car, why not let it reflect your personality? You certainly have the ambition, why not make it yours? (Just don't cut off the hi/lo stick, I have to admit, that mod bugged me a bit) Can you imagine how boring any of our meets would be if everyone kept their vehicle stock. All we would talk about would be fluids. Don't worry about what others say, although even critical reviews can sometimes spawn ideas.

And thank you very much for grouping all the rally VXs together. There was several that I never saw before. I don't think this whole thread should get a sticky, but the rally VX pics should be stickied. I'm surprised to see so many. It's wild when you think of that as a percentage of vehicles made, a lot of them hit the track. And no S/C's on the Rally vehicles? Wow, that means mine is faster than all of those. Were S/C's used on the Dakar race?

I'm curious, how did you finish this, and have you done some more modding?

wow... who is "cutting off" their hi-lo stick? That sounds like hack work to me... Is THAT how you work on your machine?

I had asked a while back if someone knew hot to take the shifter off, and people say to start hacking away...... really?!?! So, for all the folks out there who supposedly have swapped their own engines, that's how you took the hi-lo shifter off?

I'd rather be informed than highly opinionated!!!

No, it's not me. Someone who doesn't wheel wanted to get rid of their hi/lo shifter to replace it with a cupholder. I know, I had to read that sentence over again too. I don't think he ever did it, but he wasn't going to cut it off, just dismantle that silly feature.

    hmm... interesting info rallydude.

i wasnt aware that subaru and saab were so closely related. i know there their vehicles look similar but i just thought that most sedan's kinda look like that haha

i kinda like the availability of parts of the WRX thought, after owning the VX i learned an important lesson that your daily driver MUST have good availability of parts... as a second car its fine to have something really rare, but i prefer something more mainstream for my DD (like my current 4runner)...

good idea if i get one for my secondary car though! thanks!

Sorry about jacking the thread again, but I wanted to get some info to pbkid, and thought others may gain as well.

Subaru and Saab have no connection other than the 9-2x model, which was literally forced down Saab's throat. At that time, GM owned Saab, and owned 20% of Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru. Saab wanted to bring a small AWD vehicle to market, and GM decided that they could do it much faster if they modified an existing vehicle, rather than start designing from concept. Other than typical badge engineering, where truly the only difference is the badges, they really heavily upgraded an already competent vehicle. People who wanted a Saab, wanted a Saab, and people wanting a Subaru, wanted it to say Subaru, so initial sales were poor, until GM gave up and offered 5k rebates on the model, and they all sold within a few months. With all the extras in the 9-2x, after the rebate, it was cheaper than the WRX, so the informed buyer was excited to get the Saabaru. Bluebook used still shows the 9-2x cheaper than the WRX, what a bargain. Body panels are more expensive, but the rest of the parts are all shared with Subaru.

The 9-2x upgrades were designed in Sweden, and like the WRX, made in Japan. There were similarities in companies as they both started as aircraft engine manufacturers, but this model was all up to GM. Subaru ended up copying a lot of the Saab design elements in later model Subarus, so I think the current Subaru lineup was heavily influenced by the 9-2x. Saab was a bit embarrassed offering a Japanese vehicle, when their target market was/is expensive European autos.

If you drive a fast Subie, you'll really appreciate it. Although they are heavy, they don't feel heavy. The boxer motor keeps the weight very low, even if it has a higher ground clearance. If you drive them on twisty roads, that's where they really shine. They're fun, but no wheeling. That's why I think Subaru should have considered taking over Isuzu, as they only produce AWD vehicles, but no true 4WD vehicles; it would have been a great merger, and could have given Jeep a run for their money. For much more info, see www.saab92x.com. No snobs on that site either.

I had said this since ISUZU dropped off the US radar. It was wishful thinking, but Subaru could have been a contender in the small SUV market as well. And who knows.... adopting some of the Sube tech, anything could have been possible. Imagine.... the Tribeca could have been the next ISUZU, heh.

I believe that an Isuzu/Subaru team work could have good results having in consideration both manufacturer's background.

I did read somewhere that isuzu and toyota was on some join venture designing some small turbo diesel car that toyota is looking to introduce in couple of years from now.

Only someone currently working within isuzu's executive enviroment can tell if isuzu got any plans to make a comeback to US market.
