    Is it worth it?

Yesterday was a sad day. A camshaft on my beloved 2000 Proton seized and now I need a new engine. There are 78,000 miles on the motor. It will cost at least $7000 to repair. I may have to give up my VX. So sad.
Can I replace/rebuild the motor for less? Time to start shopping around.
    Meanwhile, I'm stuck in a Mazda 3.

Sorry, to hear the bad news. Hmmm, check around. I believe an engine rebuild costs about $3,000 (+/-). In any event, take it to a reputable automotive shop and see what they say. Keep us posted on the outcome or what you finally decide to do with it. Best wishes.

+1. Engines are definitely available, but it'll probably run another grand to get one installed.

Why don't you consider doing the Axiom engine swap that iamironman did?
You get a newer engine without the oil use problems, sounds like it would run you somwhere between 2800 and 4000, depending on how much you paid for the Axiom engine.

    Clipping from his thread:
if anyone blows a VX engine... go get a used '02 Axiom engine to replace it!! they can be had from about $1200 up to $2500... I got lucky and paid $500 for mine... but after all incidentals, fluids, gaskets, yada, yada, cost me $1100. R&R of engine(s): $1600 (paid for the extra time to work with the ECM's seperately so that doesn't count for the R&R)
