PS-its marlin, merlin is in St. Charles, MO
Well I guess I have an 01 then???

Seems strange for a 1997 vehicle

So I am I right in thinking I just need to find one with the same front or are there other differences? I read somewhere that two compressors can look the same but the connecting pipes are different?

I guess I need to remove it and take some more pics?!?!

Thanks for your help though - much appreciated

Yep, thats what mine looks like, well at least my original, and the connecting pipes and mounts are different than the older style (non-jdm)

I just thought of something else while looking at my old one to make sure it looked like yours, I never looked at the 99-00. A guy from a parts recycler told me they were different. I was talking to him about Autozone and Pepboys all having the incorrect part number, and he told me that it was only the 01s that are different. Can someone with a 99-00 see if theirs looks like the pic above? Just look at the front, if it is like this one, then it might be the same, if the mechanic was correct, then it should be completely different, and you can get em on ebay or at any parts store.

Lets find out, the plot thickens...

I need to figure this out. If I order one from Isuzu will the compressor come with the Clutch already on there?

My A/C is now only coming on after I get the engine warm, weird huh? Is the fan somehow getting stuck/going out?

For 800 bucks, I would think it comes complete, but when I tried before, they had the same part number listed for the 01 as the 99. Which I know is incorrect.

Ok, so Isuzu has the part incorrect or Autozone had the part incorrect? You are saying if we order a new compressor from Isuzu for our year number VX they will ship us a wrong part? How are you sure of this? So Autozone, etc, AND Isuzu has this part listed incorrectly?

So looks like we ALL have the same clutch + compressor, all the models from the 97-01, so who can get us this part? What does Merlin say about this?

OK finally got mine off. Mine looks similar to yours Marlin, but the suc connector is angled, not flat like yours. The sticker on the back says Comp Type: DKV-140 and Part No: 508221-2440. Is the 2440 what I'm looking for?

No, we do not have the same part!!!! Thats why I said there is a problem in the parts number database, whichever one is used to generate all the various industry databases. I discovered this while trying to replace mine. Went to Autozone.com, put in make/model/yr, and ordered the part. Took mine all apart, low and behold the new part is a GM compressor, like the 99-00 VX uses. Mine is not, the 01 has the angled suction port, and there is no way to get the flat connection to work, we tried for an hour or so, the fittings just don' match up, short of putting in new fittings I suppose. I tried one of parts on Ebay-"99-00 Vehicross AC compressor" When I ordered it, he asked me the yr of mine, I told him 01. He wrote back saying that the 99-00 part WILL NOT FIT the 01. It is unique, and he wished be the best of luck in finding it and cancelled the part I had ordered.
I then went online to one of those junkyard parts requesters. Requested it, 200 bucks later, got one off of a 2002 trooper. Not exactly the same, but it will fit with some cursing and hammering. Its tight, but I did that in winter/spring of 2009, no problems since.
If you try to order an AC compressor from an 02 trooper at autozone, not available, hence the high cost I suppose. I did not try to call Merlin, the ZU OEM part was listed at 800 bucks or some such nonsense. Not worth it, why would I replace it with OEM junk that only made it 100K miles anyway?

Nick, mine is angled as well, I just looked at my part number on my old compressor, it too says 2440 for what its worth. Try that on Isuzuparts.com, I will try later, gotta finish my statistics and English comp homework by 10pm.

Any word on this? My compressor is so LOUD I can barely stand it. I can hear it over my Power Vault muffler, 33" Mudd Grapplers, and 12" sub..... It scares children every time I start it up And it is causing such stress on the belt that the brand new power steering pump I just put in is squeaking because it is drawing power from the belt and the belt can't handle both the bearing about to go out on the A/C and the power steering needing more power.

I would get one off of a Trooper. Not worth the risk of blowing a belt, and then frying your engine

    Question

So I think I am going to go with this company for a rebuild:

    http://www.houstonaccompressor.com/

I have removed the belt a few times, replaced the P/S pump, but how hard will it be to get the A/C compressor loose to take it over to these guys? I already have the 80" 6 rib belt to put on and by pass the compressor while it is being rebuilt. Just wanted you guys input that have actually removed the compressor before what I should expect/run into/look for while removing the compressor, any input much appreciated

    Burning belt

So this past Saturday my engine bay started smoking and I could smell burning rubber..... Turns out SOME of the noise I heard from the engine was actually the tension pulley which froze up momentarily and burnt some of my belt. I replaced that and it was a ton better, but the A/C compressor is still loud and made the power steering pump squeak, so I put the shorter belt on by passing the a/c compressor and the VX sounds quiet again. I also found 1 rebuilt compressor here in Houston at Houston A/C Compressor shop so I am having that put on, and I WILL GIVE MINE BACK TO THAT SHOP, and they will rebuild it and have it for sale at $185 (+$20 core charge). Let me know if anyone wants mine once they get done rebuilding it.

    Question

In the last couple weeks (when we have had warm days) my a/c doesnt seem as cool, -- or that it takes a while to get cool. I dont have any awful howling or sounds.

This morning as I was driving the slide indicator for temperature was almost to the very left side (coldest setting) blowing just cool air. When I slid the indicator all the way to the left, then the fan sped up blowing hard, but move it a 1/4 inch to the right the fan slows down to a trickle.

Compressor going out? Temp sensors? Eh?

sounds like it could be just the ac system needs a recharge. could also be the blower motor resistor if such a small change in controls makes a big difference on the fan
