Question Need help on what to do with my exhuast.

Hi, guys. hey I'm wondering what i need to do so i dont loss power in my VX with the exhuast system. not really sure what i really need to do this, so here is where you guys come in. What do i need for no power loss, don't really care about increase, just don't want to loss power. Alosi i really would like to do a straight pipe from the cats back, what would i need and will it hurt the VX? if thats not possible what else can i do? Also do the Rally VX's have staight pipes or something else? Thanx guys. I know it's not legal and I know many of you guys have your own thoughts about straight pipes. Not trying to sound like a jerk here but i just want plain Technical answers and pro's and con's, thanx.

straight pipes wont pass inspections in most places.. so i probably wouldnt recommend that.. plus i dont think it would sound that great on a VX anyway..

I would go the route of a simple straight through glasspack muffler, i have heard good things about the magnaflow 18" version w/ 2-1/2 in and out. Its similar to the powervault and powervault 2, just different size i guess.. here is a sound clip of mine (powervault 2)

If I read that right, you want straight pipes, minus a muffler? Straight pipes will increase your db enough to get the wrong attention. You are going to need to baffle it with a muffler, if anything, for air quality issues. Aside from not using a muffler, you will most likely be staring at a CEL in your emissions module. I don't know how strict FL emissions is so you need to check through the state first before you decide to do what I am quite sure will fail you at every emissions test. But ya, it can be done, but not recommended.

You can still simulate straight pipes with a capsule exhaust, of which I have seen a few people here do. I am sure one of them can give you more detail on what they did. I think Cyrk did something similar when he went with dual exhaust, but I know he came across some issues somewhere. Don't remember exactly what it was so you might have to do some digging.

Hey Coastie! I am glad you mentioned the potential for power loss when adding a different exhaust setup. I used the Hushpower II by Flowmaster - the thing freaking GROWLS!! I love how aggressive it sounds and it is also small and has it's own internal heat shield which is what sold me on it since my dog lays just above the muffler location. Holding 60 mph creates a sometimes annoying drone hum, otherwise it sounds awesome around town! SO... now the bad stuff. It has been my experience that a straight-thru design reduces the back pressure enough to rob you of your low-end torque. I do feel an increase in top end power on the highway but around town that "punch" that I got when I swapped gears, lessened. Whatever you choose to do... but I would recommend something that doesn't take away too much back pressure. I was also curious about the SuperTrapp mufflers as you can adjust the noise and back pressure with diffuser discs on the outlet - and they look like competition pieces as a bonus!

Thanx guys. well there is no emessions test in florida at all. Also I don't drive as my daily driver anymore, as of tomorrow it will be my completly offroad/rally project and will only run it like 2-3 times a month. i bought a 2004 Honda S2000 and thats my new daily driver. So i'm not conserned about getting pulled over cuz it's just for fun use now. Also i really just want the best performance out of it and i see that the rally VX's have striaght pipes on it. So i should go with 2 1/2 pipes and if maybe 2 glass backs on each side, cuz i'm not going to connect them together, their going to be completly 2 diffrent pipes. I just really want a mean sound, but with well perfomance.

i would love to hear a VX with two separate pipes all the way back with glasspacks....

correct me if im wrong but arent glasspacks only designed for sound and you actually lose some power out of them???

If you are searching for a mean sound..... look for a lower toned muffler, glass packs are all rasp in my opinion... If you are willing to pay for whatever... here is opinion on a nice set up...

Dont get rid of your cats, use high flow cats (not for emmisions but they help with the gas smell), have a 2.5 inch pipe run back either to an H set up into the mufler and duals coming out, or put in a X and have dual mufflers on each side, but NOT glasspacks... to raspy. and if you want to have even a little more fun, on the dual pipes, before they enter in the X pipe or H connection, add 2 2.5 inch cut outs with electric cutouts from mccord power plate... they are only like 105 bucks and are very durable. I used to run them on my Formula (Exhaust: Mid length headers, no cats, 2.5 in, to cut out, or when sutout was closed to muffler). Avaiod the rasp, i think you will love your car more with a lower tone.

Hmmmmmmmm.......Don't really know what I was expecting, but I'm really not that impressed. Doesn't sound bad by any means, but it doesn't sound great.
    Peace.

    Muffler

I add a 2nd muffler & pipe on the opposite side from the cats, our factory muffler's very big,so my mech just went with smaller mufflers, like half the size of the original one;the sound is amazing & the torque increassed around 30%,i have no technical info about the brand & model,i'll check that with the mech this weekend so you may add the same set up.

I had my annual emission done saturday last week & passed with excelent results over the machine.
    Dakar was just the begining.

I think the best set up for our VX's regarding two pipes is adding two smaller mufflers on each side, pipes shouldn't be bigger then 2,25 each & nice tips like those the running on the tahoes, dodge RAMS & ford F-2500
