Your only options are to either keep the stock stuff nobody wants, or get a system with a removable faceplate to deter theft. I never leave my Ipod attached, and remove the faceplate when in iffy areas (should remove it more often, but I don't). Your alarm didn't go off? I'm glad there wasn't a confrontation... these lowlifes have no respect for life (and kill for pennies).
