This is how we did it:
First a wrecked Thunderbird hood.
Next on the VX I laid paper over the entire hood and taped down the edges.
Then I cut out around the insert
and threw away the center of the paper that was the insert.
Then I untapped the template and taped it down on the Thunderbird hood.
I found a center point on the Thunderbird hood and then took diagonal measurements on the template to get it centered.
The Thunderbird hood is two layers sandwiched and spot glued (lucky me)
So after marking the hood via spray paint we removed the paper. Then using a sawzall I cut out the template lines leaving about an inch of play all away around. The new scoop was lifted and separated from the original hood, so now it is a small thin hood. We then used an orbital sander around the edges. It sands quick. I measured, marked, and cut the VX hood for where the Thunderbird scoop needed to be recessed. We sanded it till it fit the way it needed to fit.
Then we lifted the hood with the new insert in place and marked the hood for the location of the new bolts that use the stock nuts. We used some kick butt two part epoxy to mount the bolts. Sanded primed painted and here we are.
And a very special thanks to my buddy Erik who helped me.

so u still have ur original insert not chopped or anything? I imagined alot more work than what u did. I pictured molding to the original insert and all that good stuff. I have the most complicated way of doing things. I like how u did that. I'm gonna try it with a different hood.
looks awesome.

Do you have some pix at different angles. I’m curious to see how it looks from the side. Nice work!

Spyder,
Are you keeping your old insert or are you interested in selling it? I may be interested.

Put a smiley after you say that Bub.
Looks pretty sweet from that one picture. Do you have any other shots maybe from a different angle? Good luck with trying to make it functional, hope you figure it all out without too much trouble.
