It sounds to me that Eric's approach is the best for your needs - just suppliment the existing fan. The wiring is much simpler since you really don't even need to add a thermostat - just a simple switch to turn it on and off when you want.

FYI you can fit 2 12" fans side by side the way etlsport did his if you remove the stock electric fan.
