Hell, I would settle for no friends if it meant no parties.

Pollitical parties are the WORST thing to happen to american politics.
They are an attempt to circumvent the division of powers (congress vs executive vs judicial). When we get politicians who vote "party line" rather than what's best for the country, we inevitably get poor government.
