I agree, small holes would "grip" the adhesive better. Even one or two per side.
Hot glue would not be my first choice either.
I would have to do a search, but one of the L.A. area members, bought a $90. tube of 3m window adhesive.

I will be using "Pool Putty", made by "Epoxybond", to patch holes in swim pools. (to re-do my rear window tab)
Hardens like rock, bonds to most everything, and stick a broken allen wrench in a ball of the stuff and you have a handle. Great stuff. About 11-15 Dollars for two large tubes. Enough to make a (hard) softball.
I think you could mold a water pump cover or repair a impeller blade.
