Kaiser Jeep had a division called General Products which made military vehicles, and a Commerical Products division, which made everything else. When AMC took over in the early '70s, the General Products division was turned into a wholly-owned subsidiary called AM General in 1971. Sometime in the early '80s, American Motors sold AM General to LTV corp. The cool part is that the Humvee design started while AM General still had ties to AMC - the H1 is Jeep family, designed by Jeep people!

**EDIT** By the way, I agree with everything else you said, spot on!!! I do think IFS has its place in high-speed off-roading, in events like the Dakar. I'd love to see a turbo-diesel 4x4 IRS Liberty compete, but I don't see that happening any time soon what with Jeep's current sad state. Until then, I'm a fan of the BMW X3 X-Raids.
