    Here's what I found after Googling "tire ratio explanation":

    Our friends at SEMA member company Discount Tire Direct (7333 E. Helm Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85260-3123, 480-443-5621, www.tires.com) explain tire sizing on their website along with lots of other tire terminology. Section height, also known as the aspect ratio is figured on a percentage of the section width. A tire size of 205/60R15 would have a section width of 205 millimeters and a section height of 60 percent of 205 millimeters, or 123 millimeters. Section width is the linear distance between the outside of the sidewalls of an inflated tire without any load on it.

    By applying the formula on our website, you get an equation that looks like this:

    Aspect Ratio = 123 DIVIDED BY 205

    Aspect Ratio = 0.6 or 60%



    So using that formula a tire that is a 285/60R18 would be: 60% of 285 = 171mm. Aspect ratio = 171 divided by 285 = 0.6 or 60%

    255/55R18 would be: 55% of 255 = 140.25mm. Aspect ratio = 140.25 divided by 255 = 0.55 or 55%.

    What does all this mean? I have no freakin' clue. but there it is.

    first number (245, 255, 285 etc) is how wide the footprint of the tire is in millimeters... the second number (45, 50, 55, 60 etc) is how much rubber is between your rim and the edge of the tire (sidewall) in percentage of the first number... the third number (15, 16, 17 18 etc) is the size of the rim its going on

    Good tire source

    I used discounttiredirect.com. Had to go google first to bring them up.
    Paid $483 TOTAL for 265/75/16 Nitto Terra Grappler's shipped to my door.
    Very quiet on the highway and suitable for most off road travels.

    Saturday morning after much time and money spent I recieved my new 18s and the new nittos. Wow the difference!

    Thanks again to all those who had a thought on the tires, it helped alot.

    Too late now, but I will chime in that Nitto Terra Grapplers are excellent AT tires. I had them on my old Trooper before it got wrecked. Might pack up in heavy mud, but I'm guessing that is a secondary concern...

    So did you end up getting the 255 or 285. I am about to get either one of the two. Probably leaning towards the 255 though.

    Any suggestions?

    After two sets and 35k miles on the first set I have no complains. They look better than any other tire out there for the VX. No noise on the highways, good on AZ offroad trips, good sidewalls, etc... Sine they are wide they dont like the sand too much. A few trips to el gulfo in mexico and primitive camping on the beach (20 miles from town) they tend to grab thus making the engine work harder. But in my book I give them 9 out of 10. There is always room for improvement.
