TRAIL ETIQUETTE

ALWAYS One of the most common and most commonly broken rules on any trail ride is to always keep the vehicle that is behind you in your rear view mirror. In this way, the group will always be together -- if the person behind you slows down, you should slow down, and this will cause a chain reaction to the whole group.

This is especially important at trail intersections. If you lose sight of the vehicle in front of you, let the driver know to slow down -- another great reason to have a CB. This in turn will work its way up to the trail leader and no one will get lost.

Do not follow too closely either, especially while going UPHILL. The truck in front of you may need to roll back to take a different line and needs space. When you make it up over an obstacle, you need to wait for the next vehicle in line to make it, so if a strap is needed you can assist. If those below you can't see over the top of an obstacle, let them know when it's clear at the top.

You won't regret it! Definitely something to experience at least once.

KEEP IN MIND: You DO NOT have to tear up your truck to have a ton of fun. Some of the gang go on the crazy trails, some of us more sane individuals (well, that's debatable)...but I digress....some of us go on great trails, with some great rocks, ledges, and the scenery is magnificent.

MANY 1st timers (incl me) went totally stock and did fine. On the Tuesday of the week, we used to go on the "VX Only Run"...but it's now kind of been renamed the "Zu's" only and it's always a trail a total stocker can handle.
My VX was not lifted but did upsize the tires a bit, gained about 1" - 1 1/4" height...and wow, did that little inch make a difference!

BTW, can you tell we have a lot of good fun and laughs while hanging with the gang on the stoop?........
If you come, you can do as little or as much as you want! There's often an "open seat" in somebody's rig that you're welcome to ride along!

Running shoes...most trails are short enough I can be out in relatively short time.

One of the things you can do to minimize weight in your trail tool kit is to eliminate wrench and socket sizes that Isuzu doesn't use. Here is my list of common sizes I have encountered wrenching on my Trooper:

As you can see, there are a lot of sizes you probably won't need on the trail, at least not for your rig. So you can eliminate something like half the wrenches and sockets in your kit, and of course carry a crescent wrench or two just in case.

Of course, it is not quite as simple as that...for example, while a 27mm socket works fine for all needed applications (torsion bar adjustment and lower ball joint come to mind), in many other sizes wrenches will be needed in certain places due to clearance issues. So, you say, why not just haul a minimal set of wrenches in the above sizes? Sure, a box wrench is slow, but it will get the job done...

Well, not always. As I found out to my dismay when replacing a timing belt tensioner on my Trooper in a campground in Moab, having the right size (24mm) wrench did no good for the crank pulley bolt, I needed a deep well 24mm socket to get into the dished pulley to the bolt. So now I carry a 24mm wrench and a 24mm deep well socket.

Another little tool that comes in handy is a 14mm box wrench with the end of the box ground down a bit so the wrench can fit fully onto the driveshaft bolts, against the curve of the flange. Not all Isuzu driveshafts are the same, and neither are all wrenches, so I suggest trying the fit of your wrench on your rig's driveshafts before you actually need it on the trail.

Another little wrenching tool I carry is a very small pipe wrench. This baby can remove brake line fittings that your other wrenches (including flare nut wrenches) have already rounded off.

I also choose to carry gear wrenches for most of the above sizes. Although not absolutely necessary, I find they often fit where socket wrenches do not, and really speed up the wrenching. It is up to you if the cost and weight are worth it.

hehe...I didn't say I WAS carrying all this stuff.....just combined all the lists....should getcha ready for the zombie revolution though, dontcha think? :laugho: Besides, if I carried ALL that stuff....I think I'd get negative MPG...!!:laugho: I didn't even carry that much stuff when I lived in L.A. and DID have an earthquake kit in the car!

Going to Moab though I'm going to look like the beverly Hillbillies pulling into B.H.....I've got a front fender cladding, 2 complete roof rail sets (like 5' long!), an OEM fog switch and pigtail/complete wiring, a mechanic's rolling chair, my new JAMAS boxes (don't leave home without them!), a box of misc.stuff to sell at the "VX swap meet", box of energy food, ....and somewhere back there will be a plastic tote of misc VX stuff and trail stuff, and oh yeah, maybe some luggage and clothing for the week??? sheesh...she's going to be loaded down!
