hahaha that's awesome!
ROFL
That one's a keeper. Don't think I'll be replacing mine yet though.
Ha ha. Took me a second.
Somebodys gotta use that one...it's too funny!
Must... resist... urge... to copy... ;)
No guys, we can't use that or somebody's feelings might get hurt. :p
So apparently, even childish over-simplifications aren't enough? It doesn't take a rocket-scientist to figure out comments such as these stem from threads like the "hello world" thread, but the subject being discussed there wasn't about hurting anyone's feelings, it was about seeing things from another viewpoint and realizing that even well-meant suggestions (using the search function) can be viewed two different ways.
I personally can't help but see the irony in it being implied by veteran members that a newb is lazy for not using the search function, when veteran members could be viewed as just as lazy for not using his/her knowledge to conduct what should be a quick search based on terminology now known to them to provide an example to a newb of what to search for as it relates to a VX.
Maybe the next search should be for the "give a man a fish vs. teach a man to fish" concept? :p
Given the number of Ford F-150's rolling around, that site may very well have to deal with an unusually high number of repeat "dumb" questions, but as a website dealing with a substantially lower number of prospective members, shouldn't VX.Info hold itself to a bit higher standard?
Use the search engine yourself and you may notice that those of us who advocate its use are often the ones answering the questions (politely I might add). Maybe you'd like to start devoting more of your posts to answering questions, and less to defending the (supposed) downtrodden? :yesy:
for some reason just because some really nice people who ar emembers on this site have on a pretty regular basis have helped people out of their goodness are now expected to continue to be an eternal resource for others who just can not be bothered to try a little work themselves. I dont count myself as part of those friendly folf Im too crotchety but I know I dont mind answering the people who have said they have tried searching as I do those that ask the most basic question that can be found in multiple threads.
I beleive though by telling them to try the search they will learn the search and be able to help themselves and not expect others to just keep answering their questions.
I, personally, belong to many forums (this one just happens to be my favorite). I search thru them all to find needed info. For one, I learn more that way. Secondly, it allows me to ask questions afterward as a more informed individual which helps, not only myself, but everyone else who searches after me. LONG LIVE THE SEARCH! 'The truth is out there...' :p
No one is saying that using the search function is a bad thing, only that ways of promoting it could be improved upon. If that happened, maybe things could get to the point where there would be no downtrodden to defend in the first place.
ummm.... im sorry guys, but whats the point of forum if you expect everyone to just look up their answers?
Isnt that basically an online encyclopedia? Doesnt sound too much fun to be 'a part of' to me...
plus, one of the things that makes this site great is how close we are to each other, we probably wouldnt have that connection without interacting...
just my $00.02
Hey Trek... you again... HAHA j/k. :p
Because you mentioned the "Hello World" thread, I just searched for it and opened it for the first time. I originally knew what the topic was about because I previewed the first post so therefore had no interest in opening it. There in itself is the issue with an individial not searching for topics that have been covered countless times - there is an inherent stance to 'help those who help themselves'... or simply pay no attention... or the urge to tell them to help themselves. However, I was kind of surprised to see the turn that thread took and now understand why you mention it here. Had Sue not covered it so handily new guy may not have had his questions answered and could have turned against the site...? Kudos to her for taking the time to better the experience of new users and the efficiency of this site. Awesome!
I, however, also have to point out the grabbing of the bull by the horns method of gaining open knowledge versus the grabbing of the bull by the horns method of supplying it. I would say the complaint of an individual not using the search function does not simply apply to 'newbs' of this forum but instead is a hint at an internet etiquette faux pas on a large scale. I think as a whole we (humans) are at the end of the early stages of forum-use evolution and expressing "come on, get with the program" is perfectly legit. In the future, this stance will have hopefully conditioned newbies to search from the outset which will effectively improve our search engines' ability to supply info for all and invoke exponential growth in the clarity of our knowledge base. This should give more strength to 'searching naturally' versus 'asking naturally'... :yeso: Then again, I have been drinking!
Not only that... I own a Jeep! It's a mad mad world.
From which viewpoint?
Sure, maybe the people that are already here have seen the topics countless times, so the specific ways the topics can be described are by now "old hat" to us...but so what? That has nothing to do with someone new to the VX world.
It's the same on any website specific to a niche item such as the VX. It will have it's own slang terms, and to expect someone to walk in off the street already knowing the slang is simply an unreasonable expectation.
We've heard examples in the two threads being discussed where people have used the search function, and it simply hasn't delivered. Can we not take that as proof that the search function isn't the end-all-be-all answer that will end all veteran member frustration?
It's been tried, "countless times", it didn't work. Chalk it up to another failed experiment and move on.
Shut it, Toy Boy! :bgwo:
HAHAHA! By slang terms, I guess you mean "fuzzy hole", "fangs", "horns", "diff drop"... any other examples? Say, something that may actually hinder one's ability to type in the search field: "common VX issues"? Speaking of experiments, maybe you could create a VX glossary for new-comers, for simply complaining about "childish over-simplifications" and not supplying something to resolve the issue at hand implies you have no good ideas; only good observations... and as a veteran of VX.info 'shouldn't you hold yourself to a bit higher standard'? :rolleyesg
I supplied the idea of providing a VX Terminology section that could be added to the already provided idea of a VX Owners Manual.
Given your suggestions, the only idea I've seen you provide is the same one that's proven itself time and again to NOT be the end-all-be-all solution.
It's a group effort. Are you now expecting everything to be provided by others too like those newbs you complain about? Does my power of observation now detect the smell of irony. :p
nope
Look, 'gentlemen', this really has nothing to do with new VXers specifically - maybe you two are focusing on the potential new VXers because that is where your empathy lies. Good for you! Kudos and crackers all around! My remarks are aimed at the lack of effort on a large scale... I scaled it down ONCE to address you individually. So let me reiterate once more for you on a large scale... (3rd time may be the charm)...
Perhaps forum search engines do not work so well because lazy, unmotivated, no-help-for-themselves forum users the world over have flooded them with basic and simple questions that have become asinine and redundant and they have since become a bear to sift through. Consider it a failed experiment and grow from it! (I hear clapping out there.) Time to evolve. We know the info is there, come on, so do they. Search terms? Please. Unfamiliar forum? Please. Small or not, VX.info deals with the same demographic as the rest of the internet, like it or not. What the rest of us are saying is that informing people it is time to get accustomed to searching IS our way of helping out new VXers, as well as regular folk, and our childrens' children.
Here is an example for you: I was installing a Sierra DBW accelerator pedal into my Blazer Sunday... BTW, I learned ON MY OWN that DBW stands for 'Drive By Wire' - kind of like slang terms, acronyms. And I didn't have to ask one single person what DBW stood for... YAY ME! Must be from my previous conditioning of figuring things out, 'cause as you know, I am just as stupid as everyone else. Anyway, the pedal does not fit since it came from a full size truck... what to do? To the internet! What does one do on the internet when in need of information - SEARCH!
Oh sure, I could have just gone to LS1tech.com and asked some guru to do the legwork for me and then gone to bed on time, but ya know, I hold myself to a higher standard. :p Besides, who would I have asked, "Which website should I go to for info?", and which website would I search for to ask that question?
I figured I would either have to order an H3 or Trailblazer pedal assembly to fit in my ride. Well in my search, I discovered I could use a '97-04 Corvette pedal since it has a 24x reluctor and 1x cam sensor motor just like my Sierra stuff. I could perhaps use an SSR, CTS-V, Camaro, Express, and more! There are also 4 PCM types to watch out for! Some pedals sweep fom high voltage to low voltage while others sweep the other direction causing max throttle at start up yet floor it and you idle.
:freek:
See, I don't like the look of the Vette pedal and the plug does not match my harness either so I naturally went to eBay to search for an H3 pedal anyway... Wow, it seems to have the same potentiometer housing thing as my pedal!!! So I may be able to swap my potentiometer housing onto the pedal assembly of the H3... since I have found no info on this idea, should I ask someone if I can do it? Maybe. Or maybe it is my idea to test out and pass on to someone with enough gumption to search for it or comment on it...? :yeso: It may even work for a certain VX receiving a 6.0 LS motor... :bgwb:
I was able to find all this info in one location (minus the H3 part) because the OP (original poster) took the time to help himself beforehand and had lots of info to describe his circumstances, problem, and attempts at success - people loaded with info were willing to help him out instead of just saying "SEARCH", ie evolve.
OK, reply if you must but I have explained my stance more than I even cared to and there is nothing more to say so this thread is closed as far as I am concerned; you may rejoice. Good luck in your efforts of enablement. Peace!
:badhorse:
Let's just agree to disagree and move on. I seriously doubt we're going to change each others' minds.
Are you freakin' kidding? :rolly: How about you look.
The threads we've been discussing (this one and the other that was referenced) ARE about new VX'ers specifically. If you want to get on the soapbox about internet search engines and their usage in general, start another thread and explain your stance to your hearts' content.
Regarding THIS thread though, no one has said what you're proposing wouldn't be the ideal, but we aren't living in a perfect world (no, not even here on VX.info), and probably never will. So while some of you continue to rail against that idea by beating your own dead horses, maybe you could consider taking a few minutes to stop patting yourself on the back regarding how much better than others you think you are at using the search function, and help do whatever you can to ensure that VX.info has at least a fair shot at that higher standard.
And I realize I've ruffled a few feathers in the past around here, but I hope all these pot shots that are being taken are based only on the opinions being expressed about the topic of this thread and not on our past differences, because in my opinion, the creation of a welcoming atmosphere for potential new members should be a bigger concern than ALL our differences of opinion put together.
Reply if you must indeed. :drama:
can't believe this thread is 3 pages long about people using a search button lol. My opinion on it, more so on larger forums than this one, sometimes the search SUCKS! I'll do a search for some stuff and have to weed through 30+ pages of search results to try and find it, and if I can't find exactly what I'm looking for I get tired of looking and just ask lol. I don't blame some people for posting questions about things that are a pain to find, but asking "how do I lift my VX" like every day gets annoying because there are a TON of threads about it and come up in a search fairly easy.
Yaaa!!! I got my .02 in
I've got some new that will make everyone happy!
My wife gave me the best Vday present ever, new boobies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
hahaha yeah she got them for herself, and she doesn't care. A friend of ours was like "You know I'm gonna check em' out when I visit" and I told her and she said "I'll show them to him if he wants, pay this much for them might as well flaunt them" lol. She's never been a very shy person when it comes to that stuff, but you'd never know it by looking at her or talking to her.
Haven't you guys used the search function. I mean really... before bringing up how people don't use the search function why don't you use the search function to see how often not using the search function has been discussed. If one would just use the advanced search one would find that this subject has been beat to heck at least monthly. So next time you want to beat up a newcomer for not using the search ...use it yourself. Ha ha ha ha ha.:_brickwal:?::dan_ban::waab::waab::waab::waab:

I think it's funny how upset people get about an internet specific topic lol, shows how much internet actually effects our lives these days.
