Tail-light "Mulligan"

Since there has been a bit of interest expressed in my "outside the box" tail light treatment, I thought I'd post the latest version.
Both before & after were done with the same 3/8" half round body moulding, just different colors.

It comes with 3M double stick adhesive tape on the back side.
Installation is easy, just time consuming...also, MUCH easier if you remove the T-L housing & work with it in your lap while watching TV & enjoying your libation of choice. ;)

I might have to do a "copy and paste" of that mod. So how is the rest of the bodywork coming - got a plan?

Getting a salvage r. side tail light housing/lens last week, was the inspiration for doing this tail light treatment in black instead of bling...I already have a new pass. side door in my inventory & a friend willing to help "iron out" the r/r quarter...as far as the "hot tub flop" damage goes...I've re-attached the mirror & am not sure what I'm going to do with the wrinkled door...leave it as a trail badge or fix it.
So, as plans go...this is coming together better than most I make. :rolleyes:

LDUB, never cared for tail light covers. (I mean, why cover what the guy behind you who is about to hit you can see) And headlight covers, Do you drive with dark sunglasses on at night because it cool. bone head decision.

But, I like your mod. It has very little effect on what the guy behind you can see. So, hint hint, $$ for you. I want a set, either in chrome (if I go with a chrome look) or black. Or, maybe you can write a how to for everyone with photo's. either way, that mod will be on my beloved Dragon soon.

Sorry Rowhard, It's not something that I could prefab & sell, as there are just too many variables such as placement, varying radius in the corners & so on.

I will give you the most important tidbits though...

Part # T3602C (black) from O'Reilleys...Style Guard brand
730-4240 (black) from NAPA...Prostripe brand
(they appear to be identical)

For the perimeter, I put my splice on the bottom, just below the reverse light.

Wherever there is a splice or intersection, make your cut square across the moulding, but at a 15-20 degree angle so it overlaps.

A sharp pruning shears or utility knife works best for cutting...don't try to cut it exactly to length...cut it a little long & test fit until it's right.

For the cross bars, follow the pattern in the lens to keep them straight.

It's not that hard, a 3-4 beer job. Take the tail lights out, go sit in the shade, clean em up real good, then clean em again with rubbing alcohol, cut an angle on your first peice of perimeter moulding, & away ya go. Keep the area in front of where you're working clean (where you've accidentally touched the lens) to promote good adhesion.

You won't be able to follow the exact perimeter of the tail light lens, as some of the radii are too tight...if using black, do a little touch up with a sharpie marker or black enamel where it doesn't quite cover to the outside edge.

Do the perimeter first, then do the cross peices.

Replace tail lights, admire your handy man tail light mod, have "she" come out & look at said handy work, have more beer... ;)

There's a wide variety of body trim at most automotive stores paint supply houses. :cool:

Eh, datz OK, I only do em' to please me, as should everyone. After all, if we all liked the same style/stuph, we would all be driving bowties, blu ovalz or yugos. :rolleyes:

R T...if you take the short cut & substitute vodka for beer, you can be done in a matter of seconds. ;)

hey DUB, with some of kentuckys finest, I can make a all afternooner of this. How much should I buy? 10 feet or so.

The ones I mentioned earlier come in 18' rolls...which is about 12' too much.(I used about 3' per, with maybe 8-10" waste total)

On the plus side, it gives you LOTS of leeway for "do overs"(mulligans ;) )

Another weird factoid...the chrome is about half the cost of "plain ol' black"...go figure.

And another nuther thing...the chrome "checks" after time on the tighter bends.

I have Left Rear Brake light out. How do I remove the Tail-light Housing. I removed the two screws in the inside closest to the door, but their still seems to be something else holding it in. Clips maybe? Any help will be appreciated.

Yep, just friction pins are all that's between you & the back side.:_wrench:

yep. just pull straight out towards the rear of the vehicle

see unfortunately i love the look of tinted lights...however i am smart enough to know that i dont want any more collisions with any other vehicles because the first one was expensive enough...so i added a third pair of brake lights where the round reflectors go below the tail lights...cost-$20, time-30 minutes, value-great
easy to wire and are nice and bright and add that extra....HEY IM STOPPING, THAT MEANS YOU STOP TOO....
try to figure out how to post some pics once i take some with my camera =), either that or you guys can wait for moab...

yea i did that too, definitely love it, ive been told a few times now "only a moron would rear end you!" when i hit the brakes the back of my vx lights up like a christmas tree.. 4 tail lights total and 5 brake lights

yea ive got 2 running lights and 5 brake lights...

Nice work Larry, but what else would we expect. You always have nice mods.
