I have a question for the builder: On the first page of pictures you show one where you have ground away the corner of the steering gear in order to get clearance. Was there not enough to move the engine 1/4 inch to the passenger side.??? When you dropped the engine in and positioned it - did you spot weld the motor mounts then unbolt and lift the engine in order to do a more permanent mount of the mounts to the frame??? Just curious. Eb.
I'm not surprised at the cost. I bet the hours spent are way more than a person would think. If anything, I'm surprised at the condition of the starting specimen for this type of investment/project. The undercarriage rust LOOKS horrible. It makes me think frame-off-restoration -- before starting with the engine transplant.
Obviously, it's not QUITE that bad...but a bad enough I wonder if the owner didn't consider selling/buying a lower-mileage...or, at least, lower rust unit? Maybe that's the norm in the NE though? I'm in the midwest and own a Florida truck. Seems like FL would be pretty bad with salt-water and such. But my rust level can't be 10-15% of what I see in the rear undercarriage (and engine compartment) pics.
Would LOVE to drive a V8 VX though! I'm thinking 383 stroker with ZF6 transmission!....then one in my vette of course! :bgwo:
I've been wondering if a Jeep wrangler 4.0 I6 and transmission wouldn't be a decent fit. I know the HP is less but most VX's are probably running on the same HP more or less with worn out engines. ?? The 4.0 lasts forever and are easy to find.
Again - HAT's OFF to the Builder(s)! First rate fabrication work - PERIOD! Outstanding "problem solving", made it look "factory", killer upgrades, and a pretty damned nice end product! Yes, if you gents had started with a better "donor", this thing would have come out like a Chip Foose product! What I'm particularly encouraged by is that now you have a "template" - the next VX 5.3 transplant will go SO much faster, easier, and better; prolly cheaper too!
95K miles on my little Bumble Bee - 99% rust-free high desert VX with near perfect paint and interior. Runs like a top now - 1 quart/5K miles - but the day WILL come when this rascal is on its way to Maryland for a transplant - yes please!:bgwo:
I don't know Tom, you could probably move the engine backwards and make a nice cup holder out of the engine cover. No need for heat either. ;)
By that logic, just drop in one of these:
Ah yes, the venerable Rolls Royce Merlin, don't they sound sweet...
I can't wait to see this thing in videos.
Hell, I'd even be up for another 3-hour drive to see it in person if the gents at AutoPros would have us. Would NOT want to miss that opportunity.
Whadaya say, AP? Could we maybe have another get together if we promise to mop up all the drool?

Any progress?
:winkgray:
The VX is currently at the exhaust shop. When we get it back later this week, the interior gets ripped out one more time for the sounds system to go in. Then just waiting on Aeroquip/Eaton to finish the last A/C fitting to be able to wrap that up. Tires, emblems, detail, we are wrapping it up soon!
Exhaust is complete. New video coming soon.
Not. Soon. ENOUGH.
Gang, any thoughts on one more get together for a roll-out ceremony befitting this beast before she gets expatted? I'd jump at the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this rig in person.

Just back from the new tune by GM... this VX is pretty bad ***!
It better be...for 40 Gees...those must have been toilet paper green-backs...
Any chance you guys could take it down the 1/4 mile strip?
ojmagg, 35.
Leon R, all depends when the tracks open back up, still out of season here.
Here is the newest video...

Nice, just saw the video. However, you guys still need to "flip-flop" the side fender emblem to read: 5.3L
:bgwb:
We will when the new emblems arrive.
Audio equipment has arrived!
Blah! Who cares about the audio (it is only slowing things down), take it to drag strip, already! :)
I will miss this thread once the vehicle is done and gone.
All THAT and no "full dual exhaust"?! Wha......?????:(
Tires came in today...
Well, provided that the last few pieces that came in today work, the expected delivery date to the customer is this Friday. Photos and details coming!
very exciting stuff. how much different is the 4l60e from the 4l30e as far as sizing goes? cant wait to see some more pictures and videos.
