Venting...ranting...yet another citation!

What bothers me so much about this subject is the feeling of complete betrayal. It's the expectation that the people I should trust the most (how I was raised) are now trying their damnedest to shake me down. Somehow "serve and protect" has mutated into something that feels more like "nitpick and extort." Yeah, enforce the law, but do so without the sneaky little traps and concentration on mindless minutia. I no longer trust an officer when he's driving behind me. I feel as if I'm being stalked as he waits for me to make any miniscule mistake so I pull off the road as soon as possible (hey, I can always buy a soda somewhere and enjoy it later even when I don't want one "right then.") I have a big problem with another imperfect being waiting to pounce on some minor imperfection in my driving.

Disclaimer: Haven't been pulled over in well over a decade; haven't had a ticket in about 2 decades.

Guard rails on the side of the road on winding mountain pass roads? Oh hell no, they just put little white crosses where people have died. Though I see a conflict with the separation of church & state in that action...:laughing: It DOES make you think about pushing the limit more than a guard rail.

I received a speeding ticket there in my misspent yoot...it co$t me $5.00 to go 90+ mph that day. The officer called it an "energy conservation penalty".

Of course this was in the long ago, mid-late 70's, near as I can recall...:_thinking

It's been a long time since my last ticket, at least 7 yrs. Getting older & fatter has some advantages...:yesgray:

We all take risks every day, and they range all over the spectrum, based on every circumstance you can imagine. Our ability to judge for ourselves whether we are taking a risk that has a high percentage of paying off in our favour is a pretty sacred thing, and I totally get the irritation at having someone else--like Law Enforcement--tell me that I've made an error in judgement; at the end of the day, a speeding ticket is just that. I gambled and lost. It could have been much worse; the loss could have been hitting someone else, or flying off the road and into a tree--for any number of reasons--and really, a fine is a small price to pay. It just adds one more calculation to what's on the table.

The natural tendency is to get mad at Law Enforcement--don't get me wrong, I am constantly feeling put upon by them myself, I'm not arguing their case at all--but despite the fact that manufacturers make vehicles that go 180mph, and that I feel confident driving at XXmph under set conditions, no one else is making me drive over the posted limit. That's on me. I just take it as a lesson learned and try to be more conservative with my choices. Or at least be sneakier about it.

My major incentive to drive slower--in this particular case--is that between the rising price of fuel and the fact that the VX, as much as I love it, is a ridiculous gas hog, I just can't afford the costs. So I do my best to leave for where I'm going a little earlier, plan to be home a little later, avoid places where I will get hung up in traffic, and enjoy not having heart palpitations every time I see a police car.

Normally, I don't even get involved in matters like this... Being from the enforcement side, I think I can help a bit. Lots of opinions out regrarding cops and doing there job just to screw over people. Well if the officer isn't out there, he gets complaints that he's not doing his job. Yes, he should be out solving "real" crime but, there are breaks between the action so..... Then there is the assigned traffic cop. What do you think he's gonna do. Yes, fines and penalties are for generating income for the county, city, or state. When making a particular law, it's a fact that a percentage of folks won't abide (no matter the circumstance) thus, ensuring a revenue. No county, city, or state can survive on taxes alone so there must be alternative streams. Fines and penalties are an example.

Now, back in my patrol days, my rule was "5 you're fine, 10 you're mine" save for school zones and construction zone, zero tollerance! I can only speak for my agency but, it was left to the descretion of the officer on the out come.

As for safety, I love to go fast the same as the next guy but, there are factors that come into play as well. Area conditions (weather, lighting, side growth, etc.), traffic density, human population density, critter population density, road contidition (pot holes, turns and bends, visability, etc.), then the most important, the unknown (red ball therory, deer jumps, blown tire, etc.) When driving on public roads, its a gamble, in my 15 years as a paramedic and 13 years as a cop, I've seen a good share of those with a loosing hand. "Do you feel lucky?"

I was always told to enforce by the spirit of the law, not the letter... Many more options on both sides. Unless the officer is a complete jerk (of his own accord) don't shoot the messenger. They do empathize, they just have a job to do.

Like I said, the officer was a nice guy, just his job, etc, etc. And like I said, I really can't fault the officer. The biggest problem I have with my ticket yesterday is that I personally feel there are too many places in Reno where the speed limit is 5-10mph too slow. That's all.

And maybe its just me, but I was not taking a conscious risk yesterday. I was driving along at what felt like to me a normal, safe speed given the location and prevailing conditions. I didn't see the cop, I didn't look at my speedo, I just got nabbed and had to believe him when he said I was going 52 (I'm sure I probably was).

So I think my issue is only partly because of the situation, but mostly because I think the "system" is set up to create "traps" for decent people to fall into. He wasn't sitting in that very spot on that very stretch of road because he just happened to be there. He was there because he knows the speed limit is low, the traffic light, and that the few people driving there will speed a little. See what I mean? A "non-innocent" trap laid out for more-or-less "innocent-people". THAT is what bothers me. He wasn't there to keep the roads safe. He was there to tag speeders and make the city money. I know its his job, I don't fault him, I just don't like the setup.

That's all I can say.

Its 4th of July weekend, and you know the cops (and drunks) will be out, so drive safe everyone!!

Hey guys, don't forget about the times when there's a LINE of traffic going 10-15+ over the speed limit and you're the one that gets pulled over. Cop told me one time, "well, it's too much trouble to try to stop all of you, you're just the one I decided to pull over, at least the city'll get YOUR money". Did everything in my power not to slap that a**hole.

I live 1.5 miles from work. There is a "speed trap" where a cop or sometimes up to 3 are waiting for folks to come up and over a viaduct. People in the middle lane jockey for a position in the right lane "one more car ahead of where they could be" knowing full well which lane they need to be in to enter the interstate before they even come up and over. They hit speeds of 55+ in a 45 just before the exit. Then they slam on the brakes as they wedge themselves in between the people who were conscientious and polite enough to get there casually/safely. No disrespect, Bart, as these two scenarios are probly apples to oranges, but I agree with traffic cops swarming in this area to bust these people in a speed trap fashion. I have to question tho... Is it possible that if the speed limit in the area you mention were raised by 10 mph people would then be traveling at 10 over that new figure? You know they would... because people view speed limits as suggestions and really nothing more... like they should with seat belts! :D

So really, I'd say it's our own fault if speed limits are set "too low". It used to be that nobody would go more than 5 over, then it became 10 was the norm... seriously, it has to stop somewhere. So with that mindset, if a cop pulls you over for doing 12 over, in any place, I have to say, you had it comin.

I think you could argue speed traps are just another form of tax - it's a tax on people in a hurry, kind of like how lottery tickets are a tax on stupid people or tolls are a tax on people who need to use a road. Perhaps more appropriately it's that no politician's political career can survive based on raising taxes across his entire constituency. Traffic fines are more elegant because the politician can always say, "Well if you didn't choose to speed you wouldn't have had to pay the fine." And because most of us get lucky most of the time, we all just cross our fingers rather than charge the state house in protest.

I can and will blame the cops for "doing there job". being a police officer is something you have to work for and go to school to become. Its not like there working for burger king and they have no other choice. They CHOOSE to become jack booted thugs. There are 3 kinds of people that become cops.

1 people that were bullys in school and want to continue being a bully
2 people that were bullied, and what revenge.
3 People that want to make a difereance..... this is the worst kind, because they ALL eventual become jaded, and more corupt than the other two.

and yes i do have friend and family that are cops, and they admit, off the record, that there sole job is to generate revinew. as for preventing crimes, only if it doesnt interfere with writing tickets.

I had just commented to a coworker about how those things are BS money makers. Well I guess I jinxed myself because a few days later got one in the mail. I had no idea just how BS they are. I got a ticket for taking what I thought was a "free right" and not making a "complete" stop. There is no way I was endangering anyone as there were people turning left in front of me so don't give me the safety argument. $135.00 Lynnwood WA.

First off, IMHO, the police have to have the toughest job in the world, often dealing with the scum of the earth on an almost daily basis....I have very close friends that are cops...I don't know how they deal with that, and have my utmost respect.

Yes, the seriously negligent:
My brother's son (age 30!) in S. FL recently had an accident at 3 AM on the freeway. A car had broken down in #1 lane, no flashers on. Nephew has heavily modded hi-po sports car, was going well over speed limit, smashed into the back end.......and was drunk as a skunk! In what I consider to be simply unbelievable....the cop on scene grabbed him, pushed him toward my brother (who had been called) and said "get him out of here now", clearly knowing he was drunk. The cop made some negative commentary about illegal aliens (in the other car, unharmed as they were on center birm).

Amazingly, he only suffered a punctured bladder and had a urostomy bag for 2 months while his bladder healed up, along with many sore muscles and bruises.

Why in the world they didn't ticket him is simply beyond my comprehension! He was as wrong as it gets, and unbelievably lucky he wasn't more severely injured, and even luckier he didn't injure or kill others. He's healed, and unfortunately......back doing all the same things now....:noo::rollo:.....:(
Definitely think a whopping DUI/DWI ticket and some jail time (since it was #2) may have helped this spoiled man-child grow up a bit, and make the public a little safer.....:noo:

We just all need to live within the guidelines and laws that the majority of society have laid down for us. If you don't like it - move somewhere else.

We have the insidious mobile hidden speed cameras in Tasmania.
But we all know that they are set at 8kph (5mph) above the speed limit.
How close do you want to push it and run the risk??
The cameras are everywhere, and run by a private company.
The more tickets they write, the more money they make. They get a percentage of the fines.
No cops involved.

Is that enough to make me move interstate??
No, to many other benefits of living where I do, so I put up with it, and when I get a ticket, I get angry with myself - no one else.

Next time you get a ticket, have a look in the mirror, and get angry with that guy (or gal).
You might get less tickets then.

Flying has some truth in his post. I have close friends that were both paramedics.

One did a full career in the Army as an airborne paramedic, he loved it so much,he chose to do it when he retired. He didn't do it too long before he became quite jaded. He hated the people he had to treat because of the things they did to each other. While in the service, soldiers were hurt doing their job or whatnot. In the civilian world, they were shooting each other over a pair of shoes or because of some girl. When it got to the point that he was considering not helping someone because he knew the cycle would just start over, he decided it was time to quit. He hated the people that he was supposed to help.

It has to be the same for cops. At some point, you just get fed up with the whole process. Sure, its not true for all, but stereotypes are just that, generalizations that are mostly true. If the roulette wheel generally landed on black every time, I know where I would put my money....

I know you've issues with it....but Fla is pretty ok with speedlimits. 70 on the big roads....(no one screws with you till over 80) Most rural 2lanes are 50 or 55....some 60. All rural 4 lanes are 65 unless passing thru urbanized zones.(+10%) No posting??? it's automatically 50. When I first got my license, there were no speed limits in many areas in Fla. I-10 for instance, was WIDE open like the autobahn. It all came to a halt with the first gas crisis in '73. Man....you were allowed to drink and drive.....you were EXPECTED to. You only got crap if you hid your gun....long as it was on your hip, in your back window, or your jacket was off....it was all good.

Yep, in my mis-spent yoot, I was guilty of having FAR too much to drink, trying to drive home in the wee hrs, & crashing my 70 Mustang while moving along a perfectly flat/straight road in excess of 90 mph...:slap:

My car ended up hubs up in the middle of the road...I say hubs up, because the force of the rollover snapped all four ET IV's off at the lugs. The trunk lid was the only sheet metal left straight on the whole car. I was sore & had a couple of scratches on my back, but only missed a day of work...and NO I wasn't wearing a seat belt, I do WITHOUT FAIL now.

Anyway, the Deputy Sheriff who showed up must'v seen the look on the old man's face, cuz he issued no citation. I'm sure he knew that the old man's version of criminal justice would serve as a better life lesson than any fine or DUI.

Lived to repeat stupid activity...seat belt saved my life that time. Woke up in the psych ward of the Kona hospital that time.

Now-a-daze, I stays home or onna stoop!...:yesgray:

We only had one cop where I came from. When you got arrested, you went to his livingroom. (His wife later became an officer too) If your special crime warranted...the State Police would gather you up from Lapsley's house....but our particular crimes never did. When you got caught underage drinking or drunk driving....you'd be followed home (or driven) and be turned over to the adults (usually angry adults cause it's 3AM) and be beaten accordingly :)

Oh yes the good old days. I remember when we would put pumpkins in the middle of the road and light them on fire and run. We would steal wood from local construction and build forts. Then there was the apple fights whoever into the barn loft had a better advantage. We would toilet paper the rotten neighbors trees and soap their windows. But in Houston TX they had a mega thousand police force. About 900 were dedicated to traffic safety and another equal amount to calls to crimes etc. When I was there they had 500 openings. None were in traffic all were in other divisions. Why cant they dedicate more to crime prevention a far more important duty. Of course when I was in an accident I waited for 3 hours for a cop and was told later when I called back they only come if someone is injured and I should drive to the nearest police station and fill out a report which would cost me $20 if I wanted a copy which would be available in 2 weeks. While there and waiting after an hour I was told they may not get to me as it was getting late and I may have to return. It was then I didnt care about being polite. I dont blame the cop on duty 100% but then again I was just following orders doesnt work for soldiers so shouldnt absolve cops of doing the same. Frankly speed traps should be shut down and the towns and cops who run them should be arrested sent to jail and see what its like when you dont carry a badge.
