Any idea how many VX's came to the States?

Exact a mundo! We sent one to Russia too, a few years back. Great spot KAT!

4153 sent here and 5996 or 5998 were made

I get...

5958 vehicles being produced between 1997 and 2001.
1805 were produced for the domestic Japanese market,
and the remaining 4,153 sold in the United States.

...whenever I have searched.

The above I got from Wiki, and it has a complete breakdown of US and JDM colors/numbers.

Interestingly, JDM also mean't OZ included and no place else.
