"D" and "Low" Dash indicator jumble

In addition to the occasionally hard shifting, the dash indicators on mine are now sort of dancing back and forth between "D" and "L". I don't think the gears themselves, but just the indicator lights are swapping back and forth. If I put in drive, then push the level forward it'll stop. Anyone had/have this happen to them?

Don't know what to make of this, other than just an electronic weirdness. But I've owned this own for 10 months now, and it's starting to seem like it's coming apart a bit. Low miles about 50K, it's an '01. But the occasional hard-shifting tranny (w/ no decernable reason) and now this...hmm.

Do a search on "mode switch". Hard shifting and dancing gear indicator lights are common occurances when the switch starts to fail. Another thought would be that the pins that guides the shift knob are getting messed up with dry grease/dirt.. or so says my excellent mechanic.
